Corowa Rutherglen Netball

With two of their experienced players out for the week, the opportunity for some B Graders presented and they did a fantastic job.

Awards

Club 1: Lisa French stood tall in attack, pulling in crucial ball and providing a strong target for the mids in a standout game.

Club 2: Courtney Haigh backed up after B grade and played 3 stellar quarters at GK; her height and quick feet forced multiple passes around the goal third, allowing time for defenders to fly for the ball.

B Grade

Corowa Rutherglen 41 def by Wangaratta 70

B grade had a strong first half, playing connected netball and finding circle edge with patience and poise to feed their shooters.

Wangarratta then stepped up after the main break and punished any minor errors, and in the end extended the margin far more than the Roos would have hoped.

They are in a B Grade competition this year where if execution isn’t near perfection on the day, teams will be exposed and made to pay for it; this week the Roos suffered just that.

With two games to go they are one of four teams vying for the last three spots in the finals race.

This week’s game will be a must win match if they want to keep their finals dream alive; a challenge they are no doubt up for.

Club 1: Sophie Morey again showed her ability to impact play and lift the girls around her with a hunger to win ball.

Essential Beauty: Annalise Barlow provided a solid attacking outlet, proving again she is ever reliable under the post.

Canteen: Tori Sampson made an instant impact when she came on court, delaying and forcing the Wangaratta attack end to adjust their midcourt-to-attack connection around her early defence against their first and second phase drives, as well as her consistent presence on circle edge.

C Grade

C Grade put together three competitive quarters against the Magpies, before they pulled away in the final term.

Awards

Club 1: Alex Gniel played a superb game across both ends of the court in GA and GK, shooting beautifully when in attack before having a fantastic impact when moved into GK where she applied plenty of pressure and won valuable ball for the Roos.

Club 2: Jemma Smith worked tirelessly across WA, carrying the ball through the court and presenting strongly at circle edge in attack before making an impact defensively and winning plenty of ball when moved into WD.

Club 3: Rahni Dickins played C for the entire game and once again showed her massive engine, working tirelessly from one end of the court to the other; Rahni continues to be an incredibly reliable player who can always be counted on to go out, work hard and execute her role for the team.

Under 17s

Corowa Rutherglen 19 def by Wangaratta 87

This week the Roos came up against a very classy Magpies outfit who were simply too strong on the day.

While the result wasn’t what they were hoping for, there were still some positive moments to take away from the game.

Most pleasing was their final quarter, where they were able to sustain a strong effort and finish the game with plenty of fight.

It was a great reminder of what the girls are capable of when they stick together, work hard and play with confidence.

Club One: Lilyana Murray-Wright was brilliant across defence and the midcourt, providing a strong leadership presence both on and off the court; she worked hard all game and was a great voice and presence for the team.

Club Two: Maci Coats was fantastic in defence, working hard one-on-one against the WA to dictate her movement up the court and also played a nice role transitioning the ball through the court.

Club Three: Dekoda Smith once again read the ball beautifully and did an outstanding job transitioning the ball down the court; She flew for intercepts, created opportunities for the team and worked tirelessly throughout the game.

Under 15s

Corowa Rutherglen 13 def by Wangaratta 80

Corowa Rutherglen’s Under 15s showed great adaptability in their loss to the Magpies, particularly while playing with a shortened squad.

The girls welcomed a new player into the team and quickly adapted to different combinations and roles, demonstrating fantastic teamwork and resilience.

A major highlight was the team’s improvement on their previous meeting, with the girls beating their scoring target from last time.

Their positive attitude, willingness to adapt, and continued improvement were all fantastic takeaways from the match.

Charlotte Lake had a great game and was adaptable in a range of positions she doesn’t normally play.

Her leadership and willingness to give it a crack was a testament to the player that she is.

Bella Huggins had a great game in GS, netting five of the team's 13 goals.

Her confidence has been outstanding the past few weeks, and she sets up a lot for her other goalie.

Asha Mardling had a consistent four quarters in defence and worked tirelessly all game.

She didn’t drop her head and continued to contest each ball for 60 minutes.
