Corowa well beaten by ladder leaders
Corowa travelled to Tallangatta on Saturday to face the undefeated ladder leaders and, after losing the toss, were sent into the field.
The task was always going to be tough against Tallangatta’s imposing opening pair of Oswell and Willet.
Corowa made a reasonable start, with the opening overs evenly contested before the Tallangatta openers began to accelerate, capitalising on any loose deliveries.
The pair put on 93 before Mark Athanitis provided the breakthrough, dismissing Willet for 44.
Athanitis struck again shortly after, trapping Oswell for 52 to pull momentum back Corowa’s way.
Callum Langlands then joined the attack and removed Neville for a duck, leaving Tallangatta at 3/105.
A steady 50-run partnership between Killeen and Nicklin followed, before Corowa struck twice in two balls to inject life back into the contest.
Tallangatta negotiated the middle overs with minimal risk before launching a late assault to finish at 9/226 from their 50 overs.
Mark Athanitis (10 overs, 2/34) and Tyler Abley (9 overs, 1/37) were the standout bowlers, helping restrict Tallangatta to a slightly above-par total on the Rowen Park surface.
In reply, Corowa’s batting never found momentum. Tallangatta’s opening bowlers, led by English import Mitch Killeen (10 overs, 5/18), delivered a superb display of seam bowling that strangled the Corowa lineup.
Regular wickets saw Corowa dismissed for 111 in the 31st over, a disappointing result on the competition’s premier batting wicket.
Jarred Lane (43) and Mark Athanitis (28*), who provided some late entertainment, were the only notable contributors with the bat.
A Grade returns to Ball Park next week for a must-win clash against Wodonga Raiders in the final match before Christmas.

Corowa Surge to Top of the Ladder
Corowa’s B Grade side surged to the top of the ladder with a dominant eight-wicket win over Tallangatta at Ball Park.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl, Corowa’s attack was sharp from the outset. Eli Lavis struck early, before first-change bowler Lenny Power ripped through the middle order, taking two wickets in two balls, including the competition’s leading run-scorer, to leave Tallangatta reeling at 3/19.
Tallangatta briefly steadied to 47 before Jack Eales claimed the next breakthrough. From there, Corowa took full control. Daniel Athanitis tore through the tail, claiming four wickets, with additional scalps to Aaron Phibbs and Lavis as Tallangatta was bowled out for 99 in 34.3 overs.
Athanitis was the standout with the ball, finishing with 4/28 off eight overs, well supported by Power (2/8) and Lavis (2/15).
In reply, Corowa lost Ben Mitchell early to be 1/13, before Angus Massey injected momentum with a quickfire 19, falling at 2/44. Opener Blake Keenes continued his outstanding form, anchoring the chase with an unbeaten 47 from just 40 balls. Lenny Power capped off an excellent all-round performance with 18* as Corowa reached the target in just 14.3 overs.
Corowa will look to consolidate top spot next week against Wodonga Raiders in Wodonga, the final match before the Christmas break.
C Grade – Division 1
Corowa C Grade (Div 1) heads into the Christmas break with a strong 5–3 record and clear third position on the ladder after an important away win against North Albury.
Corowa’s bowlers were relentless, dismissing North Albury for 105. Leg-spinner Karvan Silva was outstanding, claiming 3/9, including a sharp caught-and-bowled. Apprentice leggie Archie Rhodes (2/16) and quick Danny Osborne (2/11) also impressed.
Medium pacer Matt Goodall claimed the key wicket of North Albury’s top scorer (30), cleverly adjusting his length as the batter advanced down the pitch to smash the stumps.
Fielding highlights included a bowled-around-the-legs dismissal from Cody Kuschert, two sharp slip catches by Greg Burgess, and a tidy catch by keeper Ollie Collins off Osborne.
Corowa’s aggressive openers set the tone in the chase, with Caleb Kuschert blasting 37 from 26 balls and Silva adding 27 from 27. Mitch Ladd (19*) and Rhodes (4* at a strike rate of 400) finished the job inside 16 overs.
An important win, with Corowa particularly encouraged by a collective bowling effort from all eight bowlers — well deserving of post-match refreshments and a relaxing Christmas break.

Under 16s
Corowa’s Under 16s maintained their perfect undefeated record with a dominant 130-run victory over Albury at Albury High School.
After posting a competitive 199 the previous Friday night, Corowa’s bowlers delivered early and often. Austin Ross-Anderson struck in the opening over and again in his third to have Albury at 2/8. Cam Abley followed with two quick wickets to leave the hosts reeling at 4/18.
Rhylee Barber then tore through the lineup with two wickets in an over, reducing Albury to 6/36. The tail resisted briefly before spin twins Harry Norman and Callan Corcoran joined the attack. Lachy Douglas returned to claim the final two wickets, bowling Albury out for 69 in 30 overs.
It was a superb team bowling performance, with four bowlers taking two wickets each: Barber (2/4), Douglas (2/6), Ross-Anderson (2/7), and Abley (2/10).
The team now enjoys a well-earned break, returning to action on Friday, January 30.
Under 14s – Division 1
In a thrilling match that went down to the second-last over, St Pats narrowly defeated Corowa, who were defending a total of 205.
Corowa’s bowlers kept the pressure on throughout. Oli Matthews struck early and finished with an excellent 1/6. Blaire Livingston-Laing followed with 1/11, while Archie Rhodes made a successful switch to spin, claiming 1/24.
Albie Wood was outstanding, taking 2/7, narrowly missing a hat-trick, while Jackson Barber added 2/6. Abe Spencer capped off the bowling effort with a wicket following a spectacular catch in the field.

Under 12s – Division 1
Corowa’s Under 12 Div 1 side travelled to Albury for their final match before Christmas, taking on East Albury Allan’s.
The team produced a strong bowling and fielding display. Hugh Hicks bowled superbly, claiming two wickets, with catches taken by Tex Rhodes and himself. Zachary Playford also impressed, taking two wickets, supported by catches from Jobe Ollington and Ollie Bedford. Oscar Amor and Bill Smith also chipped in with wickets, while sharp work from Tex Rhodes resulted in a run-out to finish the innings.
Chasing the target, Corowa battled bravely. Tyler Mullavey starred with a superb 31, supported by Ollington (14) and Bedford (18). The match went down to the final ball, with Corowa falling agonisingly short by just one run.
Despite the narrow loss, it was a tremendous team effort and a great way to head into the Christmas break.
Under 12s – Division 2 White
On Friday, 12 December, Corowa White travelled to Wodonga Raiders eager to finally take the field after two previous forfeits. With Raiders short on numbers, Rory and Fletcher assisted by playing for the opposition.
Captain Rory won the toss and elected to field, and Corowa’s bowlers responded superbly. Taz was outstanding, taking 4/7 from three overs, while Johan and Jack picked up a wicket each. Raiders were restricted to 57 from 20 overs, with Rory top-scoring with 11*.
In reply, Jack (26*) and Mauritz (27*) provided a strong opening stand. Johan (16), Archer (4), Benji (6), Taz (11), Lachy (17), and Albert (4) all contributed as Corowa finished on 125 to secure their first win of the season.
A big thank you to all parents for their support, particularly Kat Nixon for organising post-match pizzas. Enjoy the break and see you in January.
