The weekend's fixtures showcased the growing influence of women in rugby league, with the majority of officiating roles filled by women stepping up amid the ongoing referee shortage.
Eboni Clifton stepped up as the first Cougar woman to centre referee, making her debut in the women's match where Wodonga Wombats defeated Tumbarumba Greens.
Eboni, is one of many who make substantial impacts on and off the field. She, along with fellow mother, Shanae Murphy, balance playing, officiating and committee duties. These women exemplify the changing face of rugby league.
Women's League Tag
The Corowa Cougars women's league tag side secured their first win of the season with a commanding 62-0 victory in the Mother's Day clash.
Facing a determined Border Bears side that played with tremendous heart despite limited numbers, the Cougars' organisation proved decisive throughout the contest.
The Cougars' entered the game aiming to utilise core playmakers Tash Johnson, Skye Rodgers, and Kenz Winnell to implement set plays, ensuring balanced involvement across the squad. Their disciplined approach to attack created numerous scoring opportunities throughout the match. High involvement from outside backs found Tyler Hocking and Bree Willett joining Eboni Clifton and Shane Murphy among the try scorers.
Shanae Murphy earned Players' Player recognition for her outstanding performance, with Jayla Chisholm named as Runner-up. Chevy Parker received the Coaches' Pick award, while Steph Johnstone was honoured with the Old Boys award for her contribution.
Men's Rugby League
The Cougars men's tackle side continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 68-8 victory over the Border Bears.
In what was a somewhat disjointed performance, the team's superior speed and skill created many attacking opportunities, resulting in several breakaway tries that extended the margin.
Corey Cannon delivered a strong running performance, resulting in multiple tries, while Steven Williams was accurate with the boot throughout. The Border Bears competed strongly and were rewarded with a well-executed try by Gepe Michael midway through the first half.
As the match progressed, the Cougars' combinations began to gel more effectively, allowing them to capitalize on their attacking opportunities while remaining disciplined in defence.
Blade Parker's performance earned him Players' Player honours, with Matty Williams and Jarrod Ballhause also recognised for their contributions.
Both Cougar teams will have a bye next weekend, with several players set to represent the competition at exhibition matches in Boorowa against Woodbridge Cup (league tag) and Regan Cup (tackle).
The women's team will return to action against CSU at Glenrowan on Sunday 25 May while the men enjoy another bye weekend.
