Rochester Bowls Club

Triples tournament

This very successful tournament was hosted at the Rochester Bowls Club on Saturday, September 12.

The 78 bowlers enjoyed our hospitality, greens and good bowling – with many bowlers very relieved when they stepped off the greens at around 3pm.

The beautiful sunshine made the day more enjoyable.

Congratulations to the winning team, skipped by Keith Hewitt from Rich River.

As we know, it takes the generosity of many members to ensure that a tournament is both successful and enjoyable.

The tournament committee wishes to extend their gratitude to everyone who pitched in, in any way at all, to make the day flow smoothly.

They are sincerely grateful for all the support they received – the tournament committee, kitchen staff, bar attendants, BBQ cooks, greens keeper, raffle organisers and everyone else who assisted – thank you.

Friday social/jackpot bowls

There was a good turn up of 16 bowlers on Friday, September 11, playing two games of 2-4-2 format.

Winners for the day were the duo of Ray Sangster and Peter Braum.

Unfortunately, the jackpot didn’t go off and will jackpot to next week – Friday, September 18.

Bowlers wishing to play are reminded to ring the club between 8.45 and 9.15am to enter their name.

Play will commence at 10am, with entrants asked to be in attendance by 9.45am ready for announcements and instructions.

A $10 entry fee covers both play and jackpot draw.

Pennant training

All bowlers playing pennant this season are invited to attend pennant training each Thursday at 10am.

The weekend selection committee have nominated Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 4pm as their pennant practice time.

60 and over

We played in Echuca on 9-9-26 on really good greens.

However, the weather was cool and windy.

A great roll-up of members played, with only two teams winning three games.

Runners-up were Jerome Shaw's Echuca team with four in the yardstick.

Winners with four in the yardstick and closest bowl were John Langley's Rich River team.

This Wednesday, it's Rochy’s turn to host the event, with an 11am start.

This coming Saturday, September 19 in Rochy against White Hills, beginning with a 12pm BBQ.

The Campaspe region weekend pennant competition commences on Saturday, October 3 and midweek pennant competition on Tuesday, October 6.

Currently, the draw can be found on the Rochester Bowls Club Facebook page.

There is an‘unavailable to play’ list for both competitions in the foyer.

Lockington Bowls Club

The fine weather is being welcomed as the bowlers hit the greens in preparation for the forthcoming pennant season.

Last Tuesday the social bowls attracted a quality field to play scrounge.

On rink one, lady president Margaret Dowie showed some solid pre-season form to score 52 points to head Kathy Maddison, 35, and Phyllis MacFarlane, 29 points.

Rink two belonged to the in-form Pos Andrea, 41 points, to lead home Denise Gilmore, 36, and Terrill Westwood on 33.

Next door, John Andrea was in solid form to amass 46 points, which covered Pauline Humbert, 42, and third place going to Lorraine Appleby, a gallant 30 points.

Saturday brought exceptional weather conditions with brilliant sunshine and true running greens.

The extra numbers facilitated five rinks in operation, and all bowlers showed extra brilliance in patches.

Non-more so than Jim Harris on the T.V. rink, showing out with 45 points to defeat a high standard opposition.

Phillip Cunnington was in second on 38 while Dave Thomas shaped up on 30 points and Sharon Smith scored 17 points.

Rink two was taken out by the consistent Ray Hanson, 60 points, while Frank Chugg managed 31 and John Fisher won the odd end to finish with 25 points, ahead of Geoff Pilgrim on 19.

On rink three, visitor Chris van der Werf stole the chocolates with a handy 42 points to head off Neil Haines, 31, Mary Thomas, 30, and Alan Sharp, 21.

Next door, John Andrea went back-to-back and won on 46 points ahead of Ashley Dobell, 39, while Owen McPhee, 28, just shaded Peter "Eggsy" Egan with a luckless 27 points.

The final rink was awarded to Russell Shawcross, scoring an elegant 42 points, with Lorraine Appleby on 36, followed by Rod Fiedler, 33, and Graeme Wood, 23.

The club opening day has been rescheduled for the evening of Friday, October 2 in conjunction with pennant practice.

Time will be 6.30pm for a meal. Members to provide a shared casserole.

On Sunday, September 20, the club will travel to Gunbower Bowling Club for a practice match. Starting time is 1pm.

A practice match at Kerang Bowling Club is being arranged for grand final eve - Friday, September 25 (public holiday), with the time to be advised.

The club has submitted pennant teams (weekend) in Division 3, 4 and 6.

In the midweek pennant we have Division 3 and 4.

60 and Over

The Campaspe and district 60 and over bowls group held their weekly bowls at Rochester on a very cool 14 degree south windy spring day.

There were 30 teams of four, that is 120 bowlers competing for a chook.

There were only two three-game winners.

It was a hard day bowling into that southerly; it tested us all out.

Ivan Hicks’ team from Echuca were second with two bowls near the jack.

The team consisted of Kevin Bursill lead, Steve Campion second, Tony Deenen third, and Ivan Hicks was their skipper.

The winners with three bowls near the jack were Garry Solomon’s team from Kyabram.

The team consisted of Garry Solomon lead, Murray Boswood second, Colin Hayes third, and Dom Perri as their skipper.

Both teams’ players won a chook each.

Next Wednesday, September 23 is at Mathoura, starting at 11am.

Rochester Golf Club

Current ladies champion Louise Williams once again showed her class to shoot 40 points in last Friday's Stableford event.

However, she was well and truly upstaged by a new golfer, Sally Parker, who had a magnificent round with a handicap-breaking score of 54 Stableford points.

Julie Leahy was next best (36), followed by Jenny Major (35).

Louise Eeles had 18 points on the 9-hole comp, followed by Natalie Dinardi with 15.

Barbara McCarty on 3, Cate Ward on 5, and Leahy on 8 and 16 were the nearest-to-the-pin winners.

Wednesday's 9-hole social golf was played on the back nine.

The winner on a countback was Peter Anderson, whose two birdies over the last three holes were just enough to win from the unlucky David Gebbie, both on 24 Stableford points.

Other good scores were Les Hedington (21), and Ray Brereton, Alex McQuibban, and Mike Austinall, all scoring 20 points.

Lockington's Ray Brereton won the nearest the pin on the 12th hole.

On Saturday, the men played par in lovely spring weather.

Veteran Ap Kuiper (83) not only easily broke his age and handicap but also won the main event with a great round of +5.

Although playing off the forward white markers, this is a great achievement and shows golf can be enjoyed by all age groups, as shown by a much younger Will Coghill, who ran second on +3.

Ball winners: Lee Hicks and Des Gallagher (+1); Andrew Cassin, Peter Anderson, and Greg Watkins all finished square.

Nearest the pin winners were Andrew Cassin (3), David Fuller (8 and 9), and Jake Wright for his second shot on the 18th.

Kuiper finished off a great day by sharing the Campaspe News eagles nest on the 12th hole, taking home 10 balls each.

One of the club's most popular charity social play days is coming up Friday week (September 25).

The 4-Person Ambrose event (any combination) always attracts a good crowd, with lots of novelty prizes and giveaways, so get your teams organised. Tee-off is from 10.30am.

Lockington Golf Club

September 11 - Stableford

Great weather was enjoyed by the ladies, with Pauline Humbert making it two Lockington Foodworks Player of the Day wins in a row with a solid score of 32 points, just ahead of Angela Bacon (31).

Remarkably, it was a tale of two nines again for both players, Pauline going 21-11 while Angela scored 20 on her first nine.

Sue Eade won the nine holes event ahead of Phyll Macfarlane, while Annette Brereton won the nearest the pin.

September 12 – Stableford

Another super spring day’s weather and Phil Stanford was best on course to win the Locky Foodworks Player of the Day voucher with his excellent score of 38 points, on a countback from Grant Humbert.

In a competitive finish, Terry Thomas was next best on 37.

Phil also won Division 1, while Darren Carnie was the lucky Division 2 winner on a countback from Trav Mancer and Ron Dixon after all finished with 33.

Nearest the pins: 3rd – Kevin Humbert; 2nd shot 12th – Grant Humbert, Ray Brereton, Tom Scurrah; 2nd shot 18th for the six-pack smack – Ash Portwine.

Grant Humbert eagled the 261-metre 12th with a super tee shot that finished within a metre of the hole – but his first-ever hole-in-one continues to elude him.

Spike’s Longest Drive on the 6th, sponsored by Hot ‘n’ Cold Plumbing – Grant Humbert, Ray Brereton, JD Wright.

Neither the Echuca CIH eagles nest on the 3rd nor Captain Grant’s yardstick on the 16th was won.

The final of the 2026 Handicap Matchplay Championships was a quality contest between four-time champion Terry Thomas and the 2024 winner, Stuart Newton, with Terry having to concede only three shots.

The match was all square after 10 holes, with both players having won three holes to that point.

Terry won the 11th and 12th to go 2-up, but Stuart would not be denied and won the 13th, only for Terry to win the 14th to be 2-up with only four holes to play.

Again Stuart fought back to win the 15th and 16th to tie the match, but Terry birdied the 17th to take the lead back.

The 18th was halved with pars apiece, giving Terry a hard-fought 1-up victory and his fifth matchplay title.

14 members played with Vince Jessen, the winner of the day, closely followed by Jill Graham.

Only one jump shot, and this was by Jill Graham as well.

Quarry Hill had a narrow win over The Hybrids, 3/94 to 3/77.

An undermanned Rich River went down to Ky/Shep 2/48 to 4/100.

Pennant - GVCA Golf Croquet Spring Season

Thursday, September 10 - Game three - Rich River Kangas vs Numurkah

The first singles games played saw Rich River Kangas take the lead with three games, 27 hoops to Numurkah’s score of one game 22 hoops.

The reverse singles games saw Numurkah fight back, scoring two games, 25 hoops against Rich River Kangas’ score of two games, 23 hoops.

It was then onto the doubles matches, where the Rich River Kangas played well and won three of the four games.

Kangas players Dave Maher, Sandra Retallick, Michael Hawkens, and Helen Brierley were very competitive against the Numurkah team of Graham Tyack, Pauline Sloane, Keith Sloane, and Ruth Cashin.

The final scores saw the Kangas win eight games, 76 hoops against Numurkah’s four games, 65 hoops.
