Howlong golfer Glenda Hoskin has claimed the top honour at last week’s Riverina Women’s Golf Association (RWGA) Open Amateur Championships in Corowa.
The event returned for the first time in three years following the COVID-19 pandemic, attracting over 80 golfers on the field for the three-day event.
Golfers flocked from all over the Riverina including Thurgoona, Albury, Wagga, Howlong, Griffith, Narrandera, Coleambally, Ganmain, Deniliquin, Walwa and Corowa.
This year’s event had four divisions all with a 54-hole competition.
The championships commenced on Monday, August 22, on Corowa’s immaculate greens with heavy rain on Monday night resulting in a bunker GUR for the next two days.
The event culminated in the presentation dinner on Wednesday night attended by players, RWGA executive and Merilyn Fage, Deputy Chair of the Golf NSW Board. Although it was a prestigious affair there was much fun and frivolity.
Glenda Hoskin was the winner of the Riverina Cup 54 Holes Scratch event, subsequently earning her the 2022 RWGA Champion.
Corowa’s own. Bernadette McLean was Runner-up in the Open Cup 36 Holes Scratch event, while Henty Golf Club won the RWGA 2022 Pennant and were presented with the banner and badges. Being their first pennant win since 1974, the team from Henty were ecstatic.
The RWGA Open Amateur Championship is over 80 years old, and the largest event in the Associations annual calendar. President Trish Gray said the event was a great opportunity for golfing friends to catch up.
“What makes this event great is the sportsmanship and the comradeship,” Ms Gray said.
“It’s not all serious golfing either, we tend to have a bit of fun as well.”
