Corowa-Rutherglen came to Saturday's matchup ready to play evidenced by a strong first quarter showing against powerhouse Wangaratta.
Despite the Pies kicking a goal within 45 seconds of play, the Roos settled quickly and took the lead a few minutes later through some fine midfield play and aggressive forward entries.
It was Magpies v Sam Dunstan for the first 10 minutes as the Pies kicked two and Dunstan kicked two, before Darcy Hope broke through for the Roos' third straight for the quarter.
Down back, Ryan Eyers was superb once again, cutting off and intercepting at will whilst the game was still under pressure. The returning Tom Forrest was also crucial, holding long-time spearhead Michael Newton goalless in an impressive defensive display.
Back from his own Magpie (VFL) duties, Jedd Longmire was also super in the midfield, using his size and motor to power his side throughout the game.
The Magpies again got the hop in the first few seconds of the second term, and again the Roos responded, but could not convert their efforts into scoring opportunities as the game was 11 points the difference in favour of the Pies at half time.
A slow start in the third was crucially impactful against the Roos, with Wangaratta turning the turbochargers on to pile on four goals to nothing. And whilst the home side stayed in the hunt, the game crept further and further out of reach as the Pies stormed home to win by 62.
Skipper Joe Hansen led all ball winners with 39 touches and an incredible 13 rebound 50s, whilst Eyers impressed with 20 disposals, 11 marks and a game-leading seven one percenters.
The Roos have the week off, and will reset for a huge opportunity against the Wodonga Raiders in Wodonga the following week.
