The last hole played in the prestigious Hewison King Island Pro Am at Cape Wickham on January 22 and 23 was the ninth hole, a Par 5, 524 metre long hole straight into the wind.
“I smacked a driver, smacked a 3-iron and put my wedge to within a foot and had a nice easy putt,” the excited Gordon said.
It meant a three-under-par round, which followed his also three-under-par first round, for a six-under-par.
The 30-year-old reeled in overnight leader American Michael Wright who had five-under on day one and finished square the second day. Well known professionals Scott Laycock and Ash Hall were in the talented field.
“I had great company from Corowa who were cheering me on more than themselves!” Gordon said.
“It was a true links style golf course. Every hole could be used as a post card. It was amazing.”
Challenging too. For example, Corowa’s professional recorded a bogey and double bogey on day one and had bogeys on the second day. But Gordon’s ability to shoot birdies was a telling factor in his brilliant win.
Comprising Brad Glare, Terry Davidson, Andrew Scott and James Gordon, the team finished fifth out of 25 teams - a terrific effort – with 89 and 85 stableford points, 10 points adrift of the winning team.
