Representing Numurkah in Division 1, John Brunner, Jack Bassett, and Lucy Bassett were premiers and in Division 2 Daryl Bennett and Hayley Bennett also received premiership medallions for Cobram. Both these clubs have been fantastic to Yarrawonga members who strive to play a strong level of Saturday afternoon tennis.
In Division 1 Numurkah played Nathalia in what was always going to be a tight contest. Early on in the contest, Nathalia was as far as 9 games in front before Numurkah fought back to be 10 games up going into the final 3 sets. Nathalia won 2 of these matches but couldn’t make much of an inroad on the tally with Numurkah winning by 8 games.
This was the third consecutive Division 1 premiership for Numurkah which is an outstanding effort. In the grand final, Lucy Bassett narrowly lost her doubles and mixed doubles but won her singles 8/6 which was a very important victory in the context of the final. John Brunner just lost his mixed with Lucy, won his doubles and had a hard-fought 8/6 win in his singles match.
Jack Bassett proved his class, winning all sets at number 1, including an 8/2 singles win. After the match, Jack was awarded the Most Valuable Player for the season, which was very well deserved.
In Division 2, the two top sides for the season, Cobram and Tatura, played off for the title. The contest was extremely close with all players keen for a win. Going into the last three mixed sets, Cobram was leading by a single game. Daryl Bennett and Hayley Bennett then took matters into their own hands, winning their set 8/0, and with Cobram winning one of the other mixed, they won by 7 games.
Hayley played extremely well on the grand final day, winning the crucial mixed set and narrowly losing her other doubles match. Daryl Bennett was certainly the star of the final winning all of his sets with two of them 8/0 victories and only dropping 3 games for the entire day. For his efforts his was awarded best player in their Grand Final.
Junior Club Championships
The last of the Junior Club Championships were completed on Saturday. It has taken a while to finish these events as there are so many junior players. It is a terrific problem to have. The standard of the matches have been wonderful with so many tie-breakers during the sets. Congratulations to all of the players who competed.

Saturday Junior Tennis
Saturday morning was once again extremely busy with the juniors enjoying their tennis. Numbers in the Hot Shots and coaching were a little quieter as some families were taking the opportunity to have a short break as the transition from summer and winter sports occurs. Having said that it was great to see the wonderful skills on display.
Presentations were made to the winning sides in the recently completed Premier League. This has been a very popular competition and provides the opportunity for the 48 oldest players to compete in a team event. Congratulations to the winning team Sabalenka and to the runners-up up Medvedev.
In matches, nearly all of the courts were filled as the players, and the standard continues to be very high. Court winners on the day were Ava Hart, Alice Withers, Alanna Ford, Sophia Connell, Jasi Ellis, Billie Prestage, Kendall Connell, Tom Hemphill, Mason Williams, Beau Lawrence, Tristan Meredith, Parker Cowan, Anthony Nieuwenhout, Danny Ryan, Noah Cox, Spencer Cowan and Theo Vodusek.
This week will be the final week of junior tennis. Hot Shots and Coaching will be on as normal. Players who participate in matches will be part of the ever-popular Parent/Child event. It is hoped that the parents have been practicing as the juniors are certainly up for the challenge.
Thursday ladies
The final night of the Thursday ladies competition was held last week. In beautiful conditions for tennis rankings shoot out was held to celebrate the end of the season. Players of similar abilities were placed together, ensuring even tennis throughout the night. Players who won their courts were Michelle Ramadge, Norma Toms, Lara Angwin, Joanne Taylor, Zoe Jones, Bev Munro, Angela Mitchell and Janelle Hartwig.
After the matches presentations were made to the premiers for the season. Indicating the even nature of the competition there were two teams equal. Yonex consisting of Lucy Bassett, Emily Linehan, Bev Munro and Faustine Verdenet were joint winners with Slazengers’ squad of Paula Mifka, Chris Hawkins, Nat Dowling and Laura Nunn. Congratulations to both teams and they were very deserving winners.
Well, done to the competition organisers Narelle Bassett and Gert Brunner on their efforts to ensure there were teams each week. The ladies were very appreciative of their efforts. Farewell to exchange student Faustine Verdenet, who has been a great asset to the competition, and we hope one day she comes back for another hit.
Tuesday mens
Tuesday night saw the Grand Finals of the Tuesday Men's competition. This season commenced in early November and, as always, has been a very enjoyable event.
The A Grade Final promised to be a fantastic contest between Head and Labuschagne. Everyone in attendance were in shock as Head was ruthless in smashing their opponents. Led by skipper Daryl Bennett and veteran Simon De Oleveria who didn’t drop a set, they combined with Mike Lairson and Jamie Hicks, who, in pity, lost their last set of the night. The score at the end saw Head winning 5 sets to 1. This ensured the team is etched onto the perpetual shield with some of the greatest names in Yarrawonga’s distinctive tennis history.
In the B Grade Final the contest was much closer between Warner and Hazelwood. Led by Noel Thomas, who won all of his matches, Warner was able to win 4 sets to 2, although the games were very close. Congratulations to the Warner team consisting of Chris Page, Noel Thomas, Jim Zanin and Corey Beggs.
At the end of the night, the season was dissected, and presentations were made. Another fantastic competition ran by Ash Wheaton with all in attendance being very appreciative of his efforts.
