Two brilliant efforts by Joe Hansen with 57 off 50 balls and a five wicket haul by Nick Grant enabled Corowa to record a comprehensive 84 run victory over New City at Ball Park last Saturday.

On Saturday A grade hosted the bottom placed New City at Ball Park. Corowa was sent in to bat. Nathan Rhodes and Arthur Godsal opened again, with the pair ticking along nicely before New City struck early with the wicket of Godsal for 11 runs.

Matt Grantham joined the crease however was quickly dismissed for 6 runs. Matt Wilson joined Rhodes and the pair pushed along nicely before Nathan was dismissed for 27 runs off 47 balls. Patrick Lavis joined Matt Wilson and was dismissed for a golden duck.

Matt and cousin Kade looked comfortable before Matt was bowled for 35 of 39 balls. A sudden collapse of Kade Wilson and Jarryd Hatton put the pressure on Corowa, however with some pressure getting soaked up by Skipper Jarred Lane and Corowa Rutherglen superstar Roo Bulldog Joe Hansen, the ship was steadied allowing some big hitting down the order.

Roos football captain Joe Hansen took the game on, blasting a whopping 57 runs from 50 balls, including eight boundaries to give Corowa a total of 193 to defend.

With skipper Lane happy with the total of 193, they opened up with the in-form Arthur Godsal and Nick Grant. Some furious bowling by Nick ‘Lizard’ Grant saw New City gun Tendai Maruma retire hurt, only for his replacement to have his stumps rattled by Grant.

Some sharp bowling by Jarryd Hatton saw the prized wicket of Botha get taken via LBW. Patrick Lavis was consistent once again with the ball, claiming two critical wickets. Mark Athanitis bowled sharply, bending his back to claim a much-needed wicket. Some classy bowling from Nick ‘Lizard’ Grant and Luke Backhouse saw Corowa claim their win, by bowling out New City for 109. A special shout out goes to our favourite Wagga product, who bowled amazing allowing him to achieve the stunning figures of 5 for 23 off 7 overs.

The club now faces tough opponents of Belvoir, with the presence of David Boon to be shared down at Ball Park this Saturday night. We look forward to seeing you all down there for a great night.

B Grade

The side took on New City at Urana Road oval, winning the toss Captain Phibbs elected to bat first.

Keenes and Eales opened the batting and after a steady start Eales fell in the fourth over with the score on 9. Lane and Keenes then took the score to 34 before Lane fell for 15. Jay Lavis came and went for 5 after a mix up between the wickets seeing him run out with the score on 48.

With Keenes batting well, he and Joe Lavis looked to steady the ship with some patient batting while ticking the score over, the pair did well until Joe fell for a very well made 24.

Keenes was still the mainstay of the innings and when Carr joined Keenes these two upped the run rate, in particular Carr taking to the bowling with some lusty hitting before falling for 30 with the score on 164. Lach Raggett maintained the run rate, with Keenes still at the crease batting superbly.

Keenes finally fell late in the innings for 74 in a brilliant display, this being his highest score for the season. Raggett and Fuge then got the team to the magical 200 mark with some great running between the wickets and perfect placement!

Early wickets were key, but New City got off to a flyer, with 24 off the first 3 overs before Fuge took an important wicket, 1-18 turned into 3-48 off 8 overs when Phibbs took two wickets in two balls.

Jay Lavis came into the attack, bowling with pace he looked to have taken another wicket with the ball ballooning off the batsman’s gloves only for the umpire from New City to give it not out, the batsman then called Sadie some ice at the drinks break for a bruised hand.

The game evenly poised, a steady flow of wickets and some great bowling from Lavis and Eales pegged them back, with Leroy Chester chiming in for an important wicket, pointing the batsman to the pavilion.

New City was 7 wickets down for 139 at the 28 over mark, but with late wickets to Phibbs and two for Eales the game was wrapped up bowling then out for 168 in the 39th over sending the New City tumbling from finals contention In what could be described as the perfect team performance.

C Grade

The batsmen of Corowa C-Grade (Division 1) have hit their straps at the right time of the season, posting 219 in a comfortable victory over Wodonga Raiders.

Billy Raggett (44) led the charge, bashing eight boundaries including one six in a typically positive innings before being dismissed by a brilliant catch on the fence.

Luke Kuschert (34) and John Conroy (34) kept the scoreboard ticking over nicely with five boundaries each as the side passed 200 for just the second time this season.

Raiders’ openers came out swinging and gave Corowa’s bowling some early stick.

This fired-up swing maestro Danny Osborne who eventually made the breakthrough with Raiders on 31.

He followed that up with one of the wickets of the season, Raiders’ No.3 leaving a ball down legside only to watch it swing back and take out his leg stump.

Osborne finished with 3/36 from his six.

It was a middling performance in the field with some catches going down, but Max Barraclough got things on track with a sharp runout.

That reduced Wodonga to 6/72 and Corowa cruised to victory with catches from Cody Kuschert, Raggett and keeper Luke Kuschert (his second) in the latter overs.

Raiders were bowled out for 104 finally giving Corowa, after some mid-week ladder changes from the league, the right to host fifth-placed Lavington in the first week of finals.
