Two brilliant individual efforts ensured victory for the Roos. Fast medium seam bowler Patrick Lavis took a remarkable 5 for 12 in helping to dismiss the Bulldogs for 92.
Star import opening batsman Mitchell Wagstaff belted an unbeaten, classy 50 to control the Roos innings which lost just three wickets on a tricky surface in the chase for glory.
Corowa A grade travelled to Les Cheesely Oval with a spring in their step following the victory over North Albury and were looking to back it up against Wodonga to start 2023 on the right note.
Presented with a barren surface captain Jarred Lane was more than happy to lose the coin toss and let the home side decide what to do. Choosing to bat, Wodonga made a steady start taking the score to 42 before Nick Grant was able to make the breakthrough with stand-in wicket keeper Matt Wilson taking a good catch to remove Bulldogs skipper Garvey.
Patrick Lavis then swung the match in Corowa's favour removing the next four wickets for just six runs with three batsmen bowled and one LBW attacking the stumps was great pace and accuracy to reduce Wodonga to 5 for 48. Arthur Godsal then claimed a wicket and when Mark Athanitis joined in Corowa were right on top at 7 for 72.
Patty then returned to the attack after a short break to claim his maiden 5 wicket haul in first grade, a fantastic effort for the young gun who has been steadily building his bowling load and is starting to hit his straps; is set for a big second half of the season. With Wodonga reduced to 8 for 80 Jack Eales and Nick Grant cleaned up the last two wickets to bowl the home side out for 92 in the 38th over.
On a difficult batting surface even the small chase wasn't without its challenge however Mitch Wagstaff showed his class, dismantling the bowling attack and leading the run chase defending what he needed to and showing conviction in his attacking strokes making 50 not out from 67 balls guiding Corowa to a comfortable 7 wicket victory with Matt Wilson also chipping in a valuable 13 not out. The day belonged to the two young guns in Lavis and Wagstaff who set the example to their teammates leading the side to victory.
It's Wodonga Raiders at Birallee Park next Saturday.
Patrick Lavis claimed his first five-wicket haul in A Grade.
B Grade
With Captain Phibbs losing his first toss for the year, Wodonga elected to bat on a nice looking Ball Park deck.
With Fuge and Lane opening the bowling Wodonga were off to a shaky start losing a wicket in the first over. The boys were bowling well other than a few unwanted sundries creeping in they were able to collect two wickets from the first 8 overs.
Rhodes and Phibbs then came into the attack, with a wicket each Wodonga were 4 for around 60 at drinks , Rhodes collecting two for his spell!
Needing to get through a few quick overs, and changing things up Minogue and Longmire were brought on hoping to get another few wickets, but Wodonga consolidated, losing only one wicket in the next 15 to be 6 down after 30.
They ticked over the score nicely, losing a few wickets along the way to be 9 down for 168 after 45 overs, sundries on 39 to be the top scorer for the innings.
A tricky chase was on the cards, Wodonga bowling well early to have Corowa struggling at 4 for 34. This brought Rhodes and Beveridge together. Batting superbly the boys proceeded to take the game away from Wodonga, with Rhodes falling needing around 30 to win Longmire and Beveridge finishing the job with a couple of overs to spare with the razzle dazzle Beveridge 64 not out and Jerry on 19.
It was a much-needed win, which moves the side into the top 6.
