Corowa met their physicality with full-court pressure which saw turnovers throughout the game.
The first quarter saw a small deficit in score however, due to an injury with Lou Madden, saw Sophie Hanrahan switch to goal shooter and Leah Keating transition to goal defence.
Corowa’s versatility across the court was evident again, adapting to the changes and challenges presented across the court. Despite the depth and character of our side, we fell just short with Magpies coming out as winners.
We look forward to reflecting and learning from our loss as we look to our next opponent, Wodonga Raiders after the Interleague bye. Awards: Essential Beauty Club 1 – Sally Hunter Dress hire - Zoe Prentice Canteen - Indianna Frauenfelder MVP – Brooke Cannon.
B Grade
Corowa 36 defeated by Wangaratta 47
B Grade had quite the tussle against a fourth-placed Wangaratta side. Even scores at quarter time had us terrorising the Wangaratta outfit. Going into the last quarter down by 7, we pegged it back to 4, then a lapse of focus and taking our foot off the pedal allowed it blow out to 11 when the final whistle blew.
There are plenty of positives to take from the game. Macey Drayton (Club 1) was a force in defence, causing all sorts of havoc for the Wang attack line. Jade Lane (Origin) stepped up to B, working tirelessly to apply pressure in the mid-court, and Lisa French (Canteen & MVP) was a strong target in our attack line, snagging 30 goals for the game.
C Grade
Corowa 28 defeated by Wangaratta 43
C Grade came out with a lot of change, but it didn’t stop them from pushing top of the ladder team Wangaratta. Our first quarter saw us slow to adjust to our new team with timing of leads, release of the ball and ball placement slightly off.
Once we adjusted in the following quarters, we kept Wang within a few goals. Movement of the ball out of defence and into attack showed a much smoother transition with fewer errors, making Wang work harder.
Jess King (Club 1) gave us strength off the line on centre passes with excellent second-phase drives. Jemma Smith (Thrive) joined us this week and worked well with Victoria Borg (Canteen) as a defensive mid-courter.
Jemma made her attackers work hard to get around her and kept them fighting for a spot in the ring. Vic showed determination from the first whistle and attacked the line of the ball creating clean intercepts and deflections. C grade is finding its rhythm.
If we can take it to the top of the ladder like we did today, we certainly have the ability to get some wins on the board soon!
Under 17s
Corowa 21 defeated by Wangaratta 37
Our 17s came out strongly against Wangaratta. They had a good third quarter, with the movement out of defence and intensity in the attack end. We were let down with a few of our own mistakes but the girls continued to fight. Rhianna Quinton (Club 1) came out in the attack with intensity which lifted the whole team. She continues to improve each week.
Sommers Hogan (chocolate factory & MVP) throws herself at every option she can which not only lets her get hands on the ball but also her teammates.
Savannah Lewis (canteen) worked well in WD keeping her attacker off the ring. Her talk across the court helped lift the girls.
The 17s have some work to do but continue to improve and keep strong each week.
Under 15s
Corowa 36 defeated by Wangaratta 53
Our 15s had a really good battle with the Wangaratta opponent this week, keeping within 2 goals at half time. Our girls had some really strong play and defensive pressure all over the court provided lots of opportunities.
Some minor errors and lack of finishes cost us the game in the end. Mille Eales (Club 1) worked hard all game against a quality opponent, finding drive and the power of prelims, she worked closely with Grace Milthorpe (Sportspower & MVP) to set up the defensive pressure from deep in the attack end.
Grace found more angles in the circle today and proved her worth scoring 22 goals. Maddison Ryan was solid in the centre on another quality opponent and Maddie showed her work rate and ability to adjust her game to match her player is second to none.
