New Girgarre coach Shaun Haffenden was motivated to apply for the position because of the club’s culture and a challenge to improve its on-field record.

Haffenden spent his first season with Girgarre this year and said it was a ‘‘fantastic club’’.
‘‘A lot of people out there just love the club and I thought I could try to bring them some joy,’’ Haffenden said.
Injury and work limited Haffenden to 10 games in his first season with the club this year, but in those games he impressed the right people at the club and was appointed coach ahead of three other applicants.
Haffenden co-coached Macorna in the now defunct Golden Rivers League last year and played his junior football with Echuca’s GVL teams. He lives and works in Echuca.
Haffenden realises he is starting from a long way back to get the Roos competitive against the best sides in the league, but is looking forward to the challenge.
He said the club was pursuing some quality recruits who would make a big difference to the side and its poor on-field record over the past 25 years.
Shaun Haffenden is the new coach of Girgarre seniors.
He plans to have training sessions in late November up to Christmas and then from mid to late January through to the start of the new season.
‘‘We have a lot of work to do, but I’m looking forward to it,’’ the 30-year-old midfielder said.
One local sports club that has already benefited from Haffenden’s move to the area is Cooma Cricket Club.
In his second game for the club in Goulburn Murray Cricket’s division 2 competition last Saturday he clubbed a dashing 92 off 85 balls with nine fours and two sixes which helped his side to a big win over Bamawm Lockington United.
