Wang Hardcourt were feeling hard done by after they drew with Corowa on Saturday. They dominated in the women sets but the men lost two tie break sets. With an ounce of luck, they could have been in a commanding position heading into the mixed.
As it was, they held a healthy 12 game advantage, but Corowa still had a trick or two up their sleeves. After Corowa fell across the line 8-6 and 8-7 in the first two mixed sets they were never going to lose.
As the last set threw to its conclusion it was evident that experience and composure under pressure would play a significant part in the result, which the Hardcourt duo of Chris and Di Lucas had in abundance. Their composure eventually shone through and gave them an 8-6 victory and gained their team a share in the total points.
The Evergreen Di Lucas lead the march for Hardcourt with three sets while the support from Kerrie Henderson and Denise Goodwin ensured Hardcourt never going to lose. Corowa’s Darrell Spencer and Peter Filliponi (3 sets) and Greg Filliponi battled tooth and nail to put Corowa within striking distance Hardcourt.
Lawn White had a convincing win against Merriwa Park co-tenants Lawn Blue and have finally taken the points against their rivals after playing two draws in the previous encounters. Once again, the White women reigned supreme while the Blue men had the upper hand which ensured that the mixed sets would decide the match.
White put the result beyond doubt when they won the first two sets to finish 8-1 it was left to Jono Keys and Kim Brown to put some respectability on the scoreboard.
Lawn White’s Wendy “Colonel” Hogan, Carolyn “Sea” Shaw (3 sets) and Maggie Snowdon were unstoppable and Blue’s Jono “Bob” Keys (3 sets), Scott Francis and Ken Parker were serviceable.

The Wahgunyah Red juggernaut continues to roll along unabated after Everton Blue felt the wrath of the Wahgunyah team on Saturday. Wahgunyah are merciless when they have a sniff of blood and once that happens, they rarely give their opponents the opportunity to get themselves back into the match.
Everton Blue never looked a chance for the entire day. As usual Wahgunyah Red’s was a team effort and Everton Blue were best served by Melanie Hellebrand, Jenny Cooper and Sam Bennett. Everton Red struggled against Wang Hardcourt in what on paper looked like a stroll in park, but Hardcourt made Everton work for each and every point and it was only Hardcourt’s inexperience that gave Everton the edge in the final analysis.
Everton held a healthy nine game and a two-set advantage before the mixed sets and after the legend pairing of Noel and Ruth Kneebone won 8-1 the gate was shut on a Hardcourt victory.
However, Hardcourt managed to win the final two sets to make the final result close. Noel Kneebone (3 sets), Graeme Gibb and Steve Cole controlled their matches while Hardcourt’s Curtis Hines (3 sets), Tom Moriya, Marika Van Stekelenburg and Liam Suter pushed Everton to the brink.
After a couple of indifferent performances Rutherglen returned to the winners list at the expense of Wahgunyah Blue, although Wahgunyah managed to put a slight shiver through the Rutherglen camp.
The hard-hitting Josh Quick (3 sets) had too much firepower for his opposition and with the steady and deft play from Rachel Crawford (3 sets) Rutherglen never looked threatened and throw in cameos from Reg Quick and Helen Fuge and Rutherglen were home.
Wahgunyah’s best player had to fossick through the garage and blow the dust and cobwebs of her wooden racquet before play, and it looked as though time had stood still and the clock turned back 20 years as Sandra Johnstone showed her younger opponents how to play consistent and patient tennis. Tye Callow and Wayne Johnstone were next best for Wahgunyah Blue.
Although it appears Boorhaman were close to causing an upset against Myrrhee on Saturday, Myrrhee were always in control of proceedings and were never going to lose after efforts of the ever-reliable Dylan Van Berlo (3 sets) who only gave up 1 game for the day.
Before the mixed sets it appeared as Myrrhee were headed for a percentage boosting day, but Boorhaman rallied to win 2 sets and put some respectability to the score line. Merryn Byrne & Kirsty Tyers (3 sets each) were amazing and Dale Robinson & Adrian McNamara helped with score line in the end.

Wahgunyah Black (Jake Saville, Mat Vogel, Cory Hill, Liam Hill) were pushed all the way by an ever improving Woorage (Jess Knoth, Math Knoth, Annika Knoth, Bec Davis) and was only the shot making of the Wahgunyah team that proved the difference in the end. Chiltern White (Amy Ziebarth, Bridie Murphy, Sarah Birthisel, Maree Murphy) were no match for flag favourites Wahgunyah Red (Peter Treberly, Brett Skinner, Kane Palmer, Grace Eales).
Wahgunyah Red were ruthless from start to finish and the youthful Chiltern team never in the match. Wahgunyah United (Brad Schmidt, Dave Harris, Rob Hill, Matt Davis) flexed their muscles against the inexperienced Chiltern Red (Molly Williams, Millie Beattie,Grace Birthisel, Hamish Smyth) and ran away with a comfortable victory.
