St Augustine’s Junior Football Club was preparing to host Kyabram for the annual Travis Atkins Memorial match.

There were fives games planned on the day, with the feature being the Under-14 game between Kyabram Black and St Augustine’s.

Pony club stars: Kyabram Pony Club members Laura Pankurst, Margie Bruce, Abbi Kimberlin and Jessica Greenwood (Can Cans), Kate Poole, L:uke Anderson ansd Alisha Macumber (Games Team), Holly Kimberlin, Elise Delaney, Hannah Surplice and Sarah Crow (Rock Stars) and Shanise Coomans, Georgia Dorwood and Holly Dorwood (Games Team).

• Fourteen Kyabram Pony Club members competed at the Pony Club Association of Victoria state championships.

The Rock Stars and the Kyabram Can Cans were the two teams that competed, with Kyabram’s Allana Adams having also been crowned champion performed primary individual at the Bendigo Pony Club competition.

The grade four student competed in six events and won four of those, also competing in a team event with Sarah Crow, Jessica Greenwood and Jorja Fitzgerald.

1999

Back in town: Ged Atkins with his nephews Ryan and Zak, along with niece Stephanie, before playing with Tongala. He had returned from Darwin to appear with his former club.

Darwin-based Ged Atkins returned to play with his original club Tongala for two weeks, kicking four goals and having 30 disposals against Tatura.

Atkins had captained Southern Districts to its first premiership and was best on ground in the grand final with eight goals.

He had also represented the Northern Territory Football League.

New coaches: Former South Australian football star Damon Rickard (left) and Wayne Deledio had answered the SOS for coaching roles with the Haslem Street and Dawes Road junior football teams.

• Haslem Street and Dawes Road hit the jackpot with its coaching staff, recruiting former South Australian Football League star Damon Rickard.

A veteran of 154 games with Sturt and three state games, he was working in Kyabram as a chef at his family’s Showground Cafe business in Allan Street. He volunteered to coach the Haslem St-Dawes Road Under-14 team.

Wayne Deledio, who was a star in three district leagues, was coaching the Under-12 Haslem Street team.

Sports stars: Some of the monthly winners in the Kyabram Apex Sportstar of the Year award in 1989 were Christle Vanderburgt, Adele Blamey, Adele Smith, Katie Lynn and netballer Rebecca Elborough.

1989

Barry Nexhip was the star of the battle between traditional rivals Tongala and Kyabram in the sixth round of Goulburn Valley League games.

In a game where 39 goals were scored, Nexhip kicked 10 goals and led the Blues to a 50-point win.

At the time Tongala was sitting eighth on the ladder and Kyabram was second from bottom.

Former Assumption College star Ray Power was playing alongside Nexhip and kicked six goals, while the irrepressible Mick Souter kicked four goals in the win.

Adrian Daly, Russell Byrnes and David Connaly were other good players for Tongala, along with Craig Gemmill and Jake Cameron.

For the Bombers, Tony McDonnell, Mark Schumann, Peter Ryan and younger Gino D’Angelo all kicked two goals. Peter Gittos and Rick Demarte were Kyabram’s best players.

In Kyabram District League football, Murchison was making every post a winner on the back of former Melbourne star Robbie Walters kicking 32 goals in four games.

In an action packed round, there were seven reports, including Mick Ryan of Girgarre, who was reported for striking Peter Limbrick.

Lancaster had beaten Girgarre by just six points in a game where Les Dillon kicked four goals and was best on ground with support from Jon Varcoe, John Bacon and Len Cooper.

For Girgarre, Wayne Deledio kicked two goals and Russell Morgan four, with Phil Tucker, Ash Vick and Jeff Turpin among the best players.

Merrigum beat Tallygaroopna by 42 points, Troy McCormick best on ground and Rocky Costa kicking three goals. Mark Newton, Alex Dennis and Sev Cortese were other good players for Merrigum.

Under-15 netballers: In 1979 St Augustine’s was the winner of the Under 15 Kyabram junior netball knockout tournament. The team was Tanya Cooper, Clare Dickens, Barbara Murphy, Cathy Gawne, Anne-Maree Flanagan, Patricia Doolan, Judy Clark and Elizabeth Hore.

Netball was starting to catch the attention of business houses in Kyabram, with sponsorship coming from Knight’s Department Store and Peter Lyon Motors.

Knights, through its Fashion Girl outlet, was offering a voucher for the best and fairest player each month in the A-grade competition.

There was also an annual award, known as the Peter Lyon Motors best and fairest award.

Bev Hill from Tongala and Jenny Gilmour from Girgarre polled maximum votes or April. Other top vote catchers were W Mulholland, D Woods, J Bradley, V Pell and J Hansen.

• Six rounds into the 1979 Goulburn Valley League season, Tongala was sitting third with four wins, while Kyabram was sitting seventh, but just one game outside the top five.

Kyabram had just lost to fourth ranked Mooroopna by 25 points, despite Lindsay McKenzie kicking four goals and Greg Bowers three.

David Long and Tony Andison were Kyabram’s star players, while Russell Barrett and Len Cooper were other contributors.

Tongala beat Shepparton by 30 points on the back of four goals from both Paul Briggs and Mick Souter.

Ruckman Garth Honey was the Blues best, while Geoff Cameron came off the bench and kicked three goals — a match winning move by coach Des Campbell.

In Kyabram District League football, Lancaster had 46 shots on goal against Girgarre and won by 92 points.

Keith Argus was the Wombats best player, along with Peter Edwards, Rob Ferguson and Kevin Bell. Graham Myers kicked five goals.

Algie Tonkin was another star for Lancaster, while Girgarre was best served by Austin Maxwell and Bob Bertoli.

Merrigum full forward John Young was kept to three goals and Wayne Leppard kicked two as the Bulldogs lost to Undera by 24 points.

Young had kicked nine goals the week before, but against Undera it was Gary Thomas, Russ Speed and Greg Pell who were their best players.

It all adds up: Gavin Thomson and Rod Breen kicked 27 goals between them for Kyabram High School in a 200-point win against Rochester in the Goulburn Campaspe Junior Football Association.

• Kyabram High School footballers Gavin Thomson, Danny Hicks and Rod Breen were kicking goals for fun in a Goulburn Campaspe Junior Football Association match.

The three combined for 40 goals between them from the latest round, Gavin playing in the Under-16 competition and kicking 15 goals in his team’s 33.22 total against Rochester Bulldogs.

He was alternating with Breen at full forward and centre-half forward, with Breen kicking nine goals.

Danny Hicks, playing for the Haslem Street side against Nanneella in the Under-13 competition, kicked 13 goals. A week earlier he had kicked 10 goals.

Basketball premiers: Under-14 mixed premiers in 1979 were Savaloys. The team was made up of J Kukujon, J Lyon, C Savino, C Wingate, A Macdermitt and P Fitzsimmons.

• Russell Parker’s ASK team won the A-grade Kyabram Amateur Basketball Association title, Parker combining with Graeme Pell to beat Undertakers.

For the runners-up Kim Bear and Roy Hindson were the best players, while another ASK star was Peter Varcoe.

Lyn Dobbin was the star of the A-grade women’s grand final, despite opposition from Penny Stokes and Hill Mastin.

In B-grade, Peter White and David Long were stars for Pressure Squad, beating Red Congo, who were best served by Nino De Girolomo.

Other stars of the grand finals were (B women) Jannell Ellott, Debbie Atkinson, Judy Taylor and Denise McCormach, (Under-18 boys) Wayne Ryan, David Parente, Roy Jackson and Craig Trist-Ryan, (Under-16 girls) Carole Gemmill, Many Godden and Louise Donnally, (Under-14 boys) Troy McCormick and Peter Carling, (Under-14 mixed) Joanne Lyon and Patricia Fitzsimmons.
