The Corowa-Rutherglen Roos made a spectacular return to John Foord Oval on Saturday where they were successful in all three grades of football and winners in A, B and C-grades of netball against Wodonga Raiders.

The buzz around the club continues to build as the spirited performances of the netballers and footballers gather momentum.
The senior footballers were able to put last week’s heavy loss to Wangaratta Magpies behind them with a thorough team review of their performance during the week and effective training sessions in preparation for the Wodonga Raiders game.
Selection changes saw the inclusion of Tom Goodwin for his first game of the season, Cody Howard’s return and the promotion of Jordie Eyers balancing the losses of Jack Schilg (unavailable) and Will Robinson (injured).
The game commenced with the Roos taking charge with many entries into their forward 50, but once again accuracy was proving costly. Raiders scored a late goal to get them on the scoreboard. At the first change it was the Roos 4.9 to Raiders 1.1.
The second quarter saw the Raiders get on top at the stoppages and move the ball forward with more effectiveness resulting in them scoring three goals to the Roos one for the quarter. At half time it was the Roos leading by 7 points - 4.9 to 4.2. Charlie Nastasi was busy up forward, Jy Lane was driving the ball long into the forward line and Joe Hansen was an attacking backman, ably supported by brother Bill, but accuracy in front of goal continued to be a source of frustration for the Roos.
The third quarter continued to be a closely contested affair with the Roos and Raiders going goal for goal. Kaelan Bradtke was a tall target in attack with his strong marking and effective finishing. Cameron Wilson and Jarred Lane were working hard through the midfield. Another close quarter with the Roos holding a slender 5-point lead.
As the final quarter started it appeared to be anyone’s game. The question was who would crack first. The Roos went into attack immediately scoring two goals through the skill of Cameron and Damien Wilson. The shift in momentum was on as the Roos repeatedly moved the ball into their forward line, this time scoring goals at will. The Raiders found the intensity difficult to counter as the Roos continued to attack, resulting in a 9-goal final quarter.
It took all game for the Roos to stamp their authority on the game, but it happened in the final quarter. Celebrations at the end of the game showed how much the win meant to players and supporters alike.
Final scores: Corowa Rutherglen 17.19.121 defeated Wodonga Raiders 9.4.58.

Reserves
The reserves scored their second win for the season. Both the Roos and the Raiders fielded 16 players topped up with thirds players. The game began with some quick scoring by both teams as the ball moved freely around the ground.
The Roos had a strong mid-field with Max Taylor, Mak Lavis and Jake Beveridge taking control of the stoppages. Thirds players Ethan Hanrahan (4 goals) Paddy Lavis and Matt Bush added some pace and skill to the team. Luke Backhouse continued his good form with another consistent performance.
Newest recruit, Cameron Bennett, showed that he is going to be an asset to the Roos with his good hands and penetrating kicking.
The Roos ran out comfortable winners 15.16.106 to Raiders 10.6.66

Under 18s
The Roos were keen to make amends to last week’s loss and in front of a home crowd, they started with some hard contested football against a pretty determined Raiders outfit.
The first and second quarter were fairly tight in a low scoring affair, with the visitors going in three-point leaders at half time, with Matty Halton and Tommy Allison contributing well across the backline to help set up Ryan Beveridge and Patty Lavis down forward.
The second half was a lot more of a free-flowing game and both sides started to score a little more easily, and with some great football from Ned Taylor and Nash Lavis across the middle and with Jedd Longmire returning from Bushie’s duties, proved instrumental in the Roos going in at three quarter time, one-point leaders.
The last quarter was another tight one, with the Roos defending well and pushing forward at every opportunity with Finn Osborne, Ethan Hanrahan working hard across the middle to provide the forwards with plenty of chances to take control of the game, but the Raiders just wouldn’t go away. The Roos showing cool heads and their desire to fight on until the end, proving the difference in a thrilling six point win.

Volunteer of the Week
Congratulations to Meghan Hanrahan who was this week awarded the Roos Volunteer of the Week. Meghan has been a conscientious and energetic volunteer in both netball and football circles at the Roos. She is a netball umpire and also helps organise umpires for all grades. Meghan also helps in a variety of ways with the Juniors and the thirds, filling a variety of roles including helping organise the canteen at home matches.

This Week
This Saturday, April 7, Corowa Rutherglen have a bye in football and netball. The following week the Roos play Yarrawonga Pigeons at JFO on Sunday, May 15, in what promises to be a big day of hotly contested matches in the ‘Rumble on the River.’
