With around 200 family and friends in attendance, the evening was a happy occasion that marked the culmination of a year of dedication and hard work.
Coaches and mentors were also honoured for their unwavering commitment to nurturing talent and instilling a love for sports in the young athletes.
In addition to the awards, the evening featured heart-warming speeches from coaches and club officials, all highlighting the resilience and determination displayed by the junior footballers and netballers throughout the season. They spoke of the invaluable life skills, friendships, and memories that were forged on and off the field and court.
Linda Eyers awarded John Doody Memorial Trophy
Corowa Rutherglen Junior Football Club’s Linda Eyers became the first person to receive the John Doody Memorial Trophy for best club person at Friday’s presentation night.
In an emotional tribute, Brennan Doody, son of the late John Doody, explained his father’s devotion to the club and the reason for the award.
“Many of you would have known dad, but for those of you who didn’t, Dad was involved with the club for a couple of decades, as team manager, secretary for a couple of years and even got to scratch his journalistic itch with the Free Press, but his greatest achievement was getting the junior football club off the ground,” he said.
“Here we are 30 years later with three sides regularly competing in finals- one of the biggest reasons for that success is our volunteers.
“After a brief conversation it was agreed that a trophy be presented to the volunteer of the year. A number of names were thrown up, but one kept coming back… I’m very proud and honoured to present the inaugural John Doody Memorial Trophy to Linda Eyers.”
After a rousing applause CRFJC President Jarrod Hanrahan said Linda, who had dedicated over 10 years to the club, would be sadly missed with her family’s planned departure from the area.
“Linda is going to be hard to replace. She went above and beyond,” he said.
