Corowa-Rutherglen fell by 26 points to Lavington in a tremendous day of football and festivities on Saturday at John Foord Oval.
Roo Jordan Eyers fends off opponents to drive the Roos forward.
The Roos welcomed Collingwood and GWS champion Heath Shaw into the fold for the matchup, as well as former VFL pair Tyler Roos and Josh Clayton, however it was not enough as the frenetic Panthers took home the win.
Tyler Roos scoops the ball up and puts the Roos into attack.
In the spirit of Roam Rutherglen, the Panthers played their energetic style perfectly to have strong numbers all over the ground at all times. This resulted in a peppering of the scoreboard, despite some fantastic defensive efforts by the Roos.
Scott Jansen about to roost the ball into the Roos’ forward line.
Shaw was included in the defensive display, throwing himself back into the pack early in the game which saw him off the ground nursing sore ribs for some time. However, it was the infallible Ryan Eyers who stood tallest once again down back, intercepting and effecting many Panther forward entries.
This saw a see-sawing affair on the scorecard, as both side kicked multiple goals each in the first half, with the Panthers also kicking several behinds.
Spearhead Sam Dunstan continued his incredible run of goals, booting another haul of five despite some strong checking and double teaming at times. Sam and brother Nathan showed out in front of the large crowd, with Nathan getting the better of the Panther ruckman most of the day.
However it was Tyler Roos who was named best for the Roos, basically bringing his own football to the game to rack up more than 30 touches and showing his class.
Despite the loss, the Roos continued their impressive return to football after a season-long hiatus in the Ovens & Murray. Focus returns to the next matchup against the Albury Tigers this weekend, and trying to find their next win.
Awards - Tyler Roos, Ryan Eyers Nathan Dunstan, Sam Dunstan
Reserves
Roo Will Seymour shoots out a handball to a teammate in the Reserves.
The boys took on the 2023 Reserves Grand Finalist Lavington Panthers at John Foord, and the weather was perfect for the June long weekend.
The Panthers took to the young Roos outfit with a solid first term. Senior coach Steve Owen was a handy inclusion stepping up in the midfield when required. Will Seymour returned to the football field with a strong presence and gathered the ball everywhere he went.
Lavi pressed on, but the Roos outfit had a handy goal first scorer in Deklan Yates chiming in with a classy major in the first term. Plenty of opportunities arose but the boys were unable to capitalise.
Captain Will Bott was a super general down back along with his comrades Kane Quirk, Tom Robinson and Royce Hunter who played their part.
Although the lead of the Panthers extended, it was the fight and spirit of our Reserves to not drop their heads and press on for the four quarters.
Panthers were too classy in the end and getting the win over the young Roos team.
Once again huge thanks to all the boys who consistently show up each week and show their unwavering commitment to the team, and the boys who stepped in to help.
Awards - Will Seymour, Declan Yates, Will Vickers, Ned Taylor.
Thirds
Isaac Dickinson kicks truly, booting a goal for the Roos.
A very even first quarter between the Roos and Panthers saw the ball go from end to end with some poor disposal skills from the young Roos. Jay Lavis rectified it with a great goal. Lavington took the lead at quarter time.
The second quarter saw Lavington get the ball forward early resulting in a goal. Some continued pressure saw Corowa reply with a major to Kuschert.
Another last-minute goal to Lavington, they went to the main break with a 29 point lead.
A great start in the third saw Brodie Julian get the tap and a centre clearance saw Issac Dickinson score a goal. The Roo boys continued to pepper the forward 50 all to no avail. The last five minutes saw Lavington kick two goals to extend their lead to 46 points.
The last quarter saw Lavington assert their dominance to win by 61 points.
Awards - Brodie Julian, Brodie Eyers, Lincoln Wright, Jay Lavis.
