A Grade
Roos 37 defeated by Yarra 47
Celebrating the O&M indigenous round the girls wore the clubs Indigenous dresses to take on the Yarrawonga Pigeons.
After last week’s tough loss to the Raiders, the Corowa Rutherglen Roos were eager to bounce back and hold their spot at the top of the O&M ladder.
Missing key centre-court players Gabe McRae (ankle injury) and Tamir Richardson (illness), the Roos faced a tough challenge against the always-strong Yarrawonga Pigeons.
The team worked hard from the first whistle but struggled to find rhythm with a reshuffled lineup.
Yarrawonga’s consistent pressure saw them extend their lead each quarter by three goals, with the Roos unable to claw it back.
Despite the loss, there were promising performances. Emily was dominant in the final quarter stepping into goal keeper, causing turnovers and lifting the defensive intensity.
Lou was accurate in goals, finishing with 31 goals at 82 per cent.
Tori Sampson and Kelsea Bullivant stepped up from B Grade to fill the centre-court positions, showing great composure and matching the speed of A Grade.
The Roos now sit equal first on the ladder alongside the Raiders and Hoppers, with a crucial few weeks ahead.
Awards: Em Laracy (Club 1), Tori Sampson (Essential Beauty) and Lou Madden (Ladies Committee & MVP).
B Grade
Roos 35 defeated by Yarra 42
Coming up against the top-of-the-ladder Yarrawonga side, Corowa Rutherglen’s B Grade girls knew they were in for a challenge.
With Tori Sampson stepping up to A Grade and Kelsea Bullivant having already played a half, the team was left short in the middle and had to dig deep.
Despite being down a few goals each quarter, the Roos never stopped fighting. The defensive trio of Audrey Hogan, Courtney Haigh, and Remy Longmire worked tirelessly to disrupt Yarra’s attack.
Audrey and Courtney put the pressure on the Pigeons’ shooters, forcing errors and creating key turnovers. Courtney, as always, proved a constant headache for the opposition circle.
Remy was solid in the defensive third and stepped into Centre in the second half, showing her versatility and combining well with her teammates to keep the pressure on.
Awards: Courtney Haigh (Club 1), Audrey Hogan (Thrive Wellness) and Remy Longmire (Ladies Committee & MVP).
C Grade
Roos 51 defeated by Yarra 55
Last time the girls defeated Yarra it was a different team lineup, however the girls did not disappoint in their determination to fight for a win.
With a slower start they were within one goal at half time. After playing in the 17s team, Rahni and Bree played nearly a full game for C grade impressively stepping up to the senior grade.
Co-coach Brooke made her comeback, playing a strong 1/2 a game in defence with Naimh. Eloise and Sophie were strong in attack and played well together.
Unfortunately the girls went down to a determined Yarra.
