Round 9 of the Tallangatta and District Football and Netball League had Rutherglen Cats playing at home against top three side Yackandandah Roos at Barkly Park.
The large crowd was blessed with sunshine on the first day of Winter after some welcomed rain earlier in the week. Captain Ben Pleming won the coin toss and kicked to the Murray River end of Barkly Park.
The Cats started the first quarter strongly with the midfield of Rutherglen getting on top around the ball and providing the forwards with multiple scoring opportunities inside forward 50.
Similar to the game last weekend against Wodonga Saints, wayward goal kicking in the first quarter cost the home team a stronger lead. At quarter time, Rutherglen lead by 2 points.
The second quarter belonged to Yackandandah, and they demonstrated why they are a top three side, kicking 6 goals 1 behind to Rutherglen’s 1 goal 1 behind.
At the main break, Yackandandah had a 27-point lead. The Rutherglen team received a simplified message from co-coach Duane Moloney at half time, reinforcing game plan fundamentals.
From the start of the third quarter, the young Rutherglen team played with intent and a desire to work both offensively and defensively.
Tyler Ferraro and Tanner twins Matthew and James had impactful quarters to get the margin back to 17 points at three quarter time.
The final term was even, with the final margin being 3 goals in the travelling team’s favour.

Rutherglen 4-9-33 def by Yackandandah 10-12-72
A tough, fast paced game saw our under 17s team unable to match the bigger bodied, stronger, and more focussed Yackandandah team who showed a greater desire to get the ball and to play fast moving football.
The boys showed glimpses of what they can do but could not be consistent across the whole game.
A great second quarter saw us kick 3 goals to their one goal 2 points, but Yack came out firing and dominated the second half.
Goal scorers for the day were Lincoln Barnes, Fred Jackson, Harry Chandler, and Flynn Verhulst with one a piece.
A greater emphasis on running with purpose both ways and a determination to win the ball should see us able to match Chiltern at home in two weeks’ time.

This week the Cats faced top of the ladder Yackandandah at home in greasy conditions after the recent rain.
The first quarter was an arm wrestle with Jax Ramsay playing a great game in the ruck and winning the tap from the centre bounce and around the ground.
This saw Rutherglen head into quarter time with the lead. The skilful Yack side drove the ball into their forward line regularly and the back line were under constant pressure.
Kane McSweeney, Elijah McFarlane, and Jaylen Cracknell enjoyed some strong form and repelled many of the Yack attacks. Scores were level at half time.
In the premiership quarter Yack managed to pull away despite strong performances by Hugo Poole, Liam Colvin and Seth Goodman.
Although it was a final losing margin of 17 points, the Cats will feel positive going into the bye and have plenty to work on going into the second half of the season.

Players have been working hard at training on centre pass strategy which was a big improvement this week.
Players always have positive attitudes, give 100% & continue to develop skills.
Our mid court of Taylor, Zara and Savannah were fantastic holding leads and driving hard all game.
Flick and Lexie combined well in goals to get us on the scoreboard with Audrey and Erica providing great support.
Our defence had some tall shooters though Audrey, Ivy, Chelsea & Erica were great at applying pressure and contesting every ball. Great effort Cats!
