Round 1 saw Rutherglen head across to Beechworth to take on the Bushrangers filled with plenty of experienced and seasoned recruits.
The first half was hotly contested, with both sides throwing their bodies in at the ball.
After the main break, Beechworth opened the game up with their hard running and experience, taking advantage of some poor ball use by the cats, eventually running out winners by 88 points.
Despite the margin, there was still some positive signs in the form of the first games by Ethan Marquison, Ian Congdon and Daniel Bell in Rutherglen Colours.

Fielding young side for the first round due to some late withdrawals in the senior side due to covid, meant some of the 17 boys stepped up to fill the void. The more experienced Beechworth side had our young lads little overwhelmed in the first quarter however as the game progressed their confidence grew, and we started to impact the game with some good attacking advances. The boys will be better for the run with an exciting mix of young and not to old.

Under 17s
Under 17s traveled to a cloudy Beechworth on Saturday (perfect football weather) in the first match for the year. The guys started really well and lead at quarter time by 4 goals, to Beechworth's credit they came out after quarter time and gave the Cats a challenge and threw their big bodies around. To the boys credit they absorbed the pressure and kept their scoring to a minimum whilst also pulling ahead on the scoreboard. After half time the lads showed a lot of courage and at one point, with only 15 fit players on the ground. Jack Keys and Lachie Webb in the middle kept the ball going to our forwards who capitalised on the brilliant skill level with Charlie Beattie and Josh Pagan- Saunders doing the damage on the scoreboard. A pleasing win was the result with excellent work ethic across the ground. Unfortunately, the kids won't be playing this week due to Wodonga Saints not fielding a 17's this year.

Under 14s
Rutherglen under 14 had a hard fought out win over Beechworth on the weekend. The two teams were very even in the first half with the Cats backline keeping them in the game led by Daniel Ryland and co. The third quarter was dominated by Beechworth until Jack Torney kicked a goal after the siren which changed the momentum of the game - the last quarter the Cats midfielders got on top led by Bohdi McCartney and co. It was a great team effort.

Beechworth were the opponents for the opening game of the season, and with a few boys missing from the team due to COVID and a lot of first year players they were a bit overwhelmed in the first quarter. But from then on, they started to have more play in our forward line which turned into goals and ended with a good win to start the season.

A slow start to the game saw Beechworth surge ahead early but the girls managed to pick up in the third quarter matching Beechy goal for goal. While we have a lot of work to do we are looking forward to a good year ahead.

With much excitement to start the season it was great to start with a win. With loads of new young faces in the team the girls really stepped up, especially given we were missing our two key shooters this week. We threw the girls in the deep end first up and they really rose to the occasion. Special mention to Tilly who blew us away with her shooting accuracy and Maiya rocking her first ever game. Looking forward to an amazing year and so good to see the girls back on the court and smiles on faces.

Awesome game to start the season with our smallest Cats excited to back on the court. Players have shown that they are listening during training with some brilliant plays on court. Great skills, great attitude, great teamwork.
