Corowa Rutherglen produced one of its most spirited performances of the season but was unable to run down finals contender Myrtleford, falling by 18 points in an entertaining contest at John Foord Oval on Saturday afternoon.
Local product Zach Arnold made his senior debut, and after a disappointing showing the previous week, the Roos entered the clash determined to respond with greater intensity and effort.
A quirk in the fixture handed Corowa consecutive home games, and with bright sunshine greeting both sides, the hosts made the perfect start.
Tex Longmire sparked the home crowd into life just three minutes into the opening term, crumbing brilliantly at ground level before snapping through the opening major.
Myrtleford answered shortly after to level proceedings, but the Roos refused to surrender momentum.
Jordan Eyers and Tommy McCaffery both found the big sticks in quick succession as Corowa's relentless pressure and willingness to take the game on saw the Roos open up a 13-point advantage midway through the first quarter.
Both McCaffery and Eyers were influential throughout the afternoon, continually winning important contests around the ground.
Their work rate and impact earned praise from senior coach Daryn Cresswell both at quarter time and after the final siren.
Myrtleford, however, showed why it sits firmly in finals contention.
Riley Smith and Ryley Sharp each converted majors as the Saints gradually worked their way back into the contest, forcing the Roos to dig deep defensively to prevent the game from slipping away.
Cody Schutt was outstanding across all four quarters and was arguably Corowa's best player.
The experienced swingman continually read the play superbly, intercepted strongly and provided composure whenever Myrtleford threatened to break the game open.
Schutt was rewarded for his efforts when he pushed forward and capitalised on a costly Myrtleford turnover, calmly slotting through his first senior goal in more than four years while playing under Daryn Cresswell, dating back to their time together at Wangaratta Rovers.
The celebration from his teammates reflected just how popular the moment was.
Moments later, Degan Purcell added another major to restore Corowa's lead and inject fresh belief into the home side.
But once again Myrtleford had the answers, responding with two quick goals to wrestle back control before half time.
Captain Will Chandler again led from the front with another polished four-quarter performance.
The skipper finished with 19 disposals, seven tackles and four clearances, setting the standard through his attack on the football and leadership around the contest.
The third quarter ultimately proved the difference.
Myrtleford lifted another gear, controlling territory and applying scoreboard pressure to establish a game-high 33-point lead by the final change.
Corowa's defence was forced under enormous pressure but continued to battle relentlessly despite the Saints' ascendancy.
The final quarter began amid controversy when what appeared to be a goal was judged a touched behind, denying the Roos an early spark.
Matters became even more difficult shortly afterwards when Jayden Forge was shown a yellow card, leaving Corowa with just 17 players on the field for a significant period of the term.
Despite the setback, the Roos refused to lower their colours.
Liam McCarthy again showcased his class with his penetrating left foot, composure under pressure and trademark run and carry creating several promising passages of play.
Purcell almost single-handedly kept Corowa within striking distance in the closing stages, booting all three of the final quarter's goals in a remarkable individual effort.
His four-goal haul lifted his season tally to 25 majors, moving him closer to the league's leading goal kickers.
While the Roos eventually fell 18 points short, there was plenty to admire in a determined performance against one of the competition's genuine premiership contenders.
Corowa Rutherglen will now face perhaps its biggest challenge of the season when it travels to meet ladder leaders Wangaratta next weekend, looking to carry the same intensity and belief into another difficult assignment.
Development Squad
Wayward Saints teach Roos lesson
Corowa 3.4 22 def by Saints 12.23 95
Goals: Deakan Clancy 2, Josh Eder 1
Best: Josh Eder, Angus Massey, Aaron Spencer, Deklan Yates, William Bott, Deaken Clancy
Corowa Rutherglen’s development squad was taught a lesson after last week's strong outing; the effort and intensity wasn’t there for large chunks of the game.
The Saints had full control, although not kicking straight kept the Roos somewhat in the contest.
Deakan Clancy was strong in the middle floating down and booting 2 majors to help lead Roos to a below par but respectable score considering the poor kicking from the Saints.
Josh Eder and Angus Massy led from the front, laying strong tackles and threatening across the ground and eventually getting down to kick a goal and reduce their deficit.
Under 18s
Come-from-behind Roos come away with win
Corowa 7.9 51 def Saints 6.4 40
Goals: Hudson Kuschurt 3, Harry Webb 2, Will Forrest, Brooklyn Mawson 1
Best: Joshua Hunter, Austin Ross-Anderson, Will Forrest, Archie Turner, William Linden
The Corowa Rutherglen Under 18s celebrated a spirited come-from-behind victory over Myrtleford on Saturday, earning sweet revenge after falling short in the reverse fixture earlier this season.
The young Roos once again featured several Under 16 players, who looked right at home.
Joshua Hunter was outstanding across four quarters, leading Corowa's best players with an impressive all-round performance.
Harry Webb continued his strong form with two goals in a polished display up forward, while Austin Ross-Anderson and Will Forrest provided plenty of composure and drive with their ball use.
Bill Linden and Archie Turner were also among the Roos' best contributors, helping maintain the side's pressure throughout the afternoon.
The turning point came in the third quarter when Corowa broke the game open with a four-goals-to-one term, setting up a memorable victory.
The win was the Roos' second in four weeks and another encouraging sign of the group's continued development.
