The 24-year-old fought in the elimination against a super tough Queenslander who took it up to and took Spikes best shots - which not many can do- which ended in a close win.
In the final the next day, O’Rourke was matched against another Victorian which made for “a very chess-like match” according to Corey Pyle of Boss Boxing, operated out of Wodonga.
“Both boys just boxed, in a fight that was super close, but we definitely know we just edged which we did to bring home golds,” Pyle said.
“This fight we are going to try a rematch for the local Wodonga show in March as it was a great competitive match.”
And the winner, retaining his title, is Spike O’Rourke.
O’Rourke’s win was one of three Australian Amateur Boxing Titles returning to the border region.
“This past weekend Boss Boxing was proud to send five athletes to compete in the 2022 Australian Amateur Boxing Titles, held at the Melbourne Pavilion.
“All athletes competed at such a high level and made an impression with everyone watching.”
Pyle emphasised that Boss is a safe place.
“Not only do we produce some of Victoria’s highest quality athletes but we allow our athletes to have the confidence to really be themselves, practise discipline and grow into really special people,” he said.
