The Timbercutters entered their new campaign off the back of a difficult 2025 that saw them only win twice, facing a motivated Rovers outfit keen to rectify last year’s close grand final loss.
Deni wasted little time getting to work in the first quarter, netting 15 times and only conceding once in reply.
Mathoura would only manage one goal in the first half, Rovers keeping it scoreless in the second term, adding another 16 of their own to take a 31-1 lead into half-time.
Sharon Moon’s Timbercutters improved in the second half, starting with two goals in the third, though Deni added another 11 to take a 39-goal advantage into the fourth.
Mathoura replicated its third quarter performance with another two goals in the final period, Rovers responding in kind with their best interval of the match, adding another 20 goals to win 62-5.
Although not expected to challenge a side of Deni’s quality, the nature of the loss may still be slightly disappointing for Mathoura, given it only scored less than double digits on one occasion last season.
It faces Berrigan next in round three, the Saints only losing by a goal to Rennie in their first game, but also being a side Mathoura played well against last year, losing the one meeting by eight goals.
