Wodonga raids Corowa Rutherglen

The Raiders were forced to change and adapt their game play to suit, which was a big win and a huge turnaround since the two teams last met (a 35-goal win to the Raiders).

Some lapses in judgement and missed opportunities in the last quarter extended a 10-goal defecit to 18.

With two of their most experienced players out the Roos needed some players to step up and the girls answered the call.

Awards

Club 1 (canteen) and Player’s Player: Tamir Richardson was on fire from the first whistle, disrupting raiders attack end getting lots of hand to ball around the circle; on attack Tim was rarely not free, working hard to clear her defender, and she put on an unbelievable four-quarter effort from Centre.

Club 2: Mik Trethowan ran out GD brilliantly, forcing multiple changes, coming up against a different opponent each quarter; Mik’s communication and leadership in defence lead to a lot of opportunities to win ball, with her quick feet and aerial ability proving a nightmare for any GA.

B Grade

Corowa Rutherglen 38 def by Raiders 48

This week’s clash saw B Grade fighting hard but ultimately coming up short.

The Raiders opponents got an early jump, and despite riding the waves of momentum when they came their way, the Roos couldn’t quite close the gap.

They finished strong in the last quarter, winning that period alone, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the early deficit, and they fell short by 10 goals.

The loss saw Corowa Rutherglen drop from second on the ladder to 5th place, setting up a challenging final stretch of four rounds as they aim to reclaim their position.

There’s regrouping to do, but the determination on court shows they’re far from finished.

Players recognized for standout performances this week were Elousie Barlow, Adeline Corbett, and Kelsea Bullivant, whose efforts helped keep the Roos in the contest and lifted the team during crucial moments.

While the win slipped away, the competitive spirit and resilience displayed will be the foundation as they push forward into the closing rounds of the season.

C Grade

Corowa Rutherglen 49 def Raiders 47

C Grade held their nerve to claim a thrilling victory over Wodonga Raiders in a match that went right down to the final whistle.

After trailing 15-10 at the first break, the Roos lifted their defensive intensity and began to take control through the midcourt.

A strong second quarter reduced the margin to four at halftime before Corowa produced its best netball after the main break, outscoring the Raiders 17-13 to take an eight-goal lead into the final term.

The Raiders mounted one last challenge in the closing minutes, but Corowa remained composed under pressure, making smart decisions with ball in hand and converting when it mattered most to secure a hard-fought two-point win.

Awards

Club 1: Rahni Dickins was outstanding through the midcourt, providing relentless drive, strong communication and delivering quality ball into the shooters.

Docs: Alex Gniel was a standout in attack, reading the play superbly and applying constant pressure that disrupted the Raiders' flow.

Canteen: Sophie Arnold led from the front with a calm and composed performance, making smart decisions in key moments and helping steady the side when the game was on the line.

Under 17s

Corowa Rutherglen 16 def by Raiders 76

The Under 17s girls came up against the ladder leaders, Wodonga Raiders.

They knew it would be a competitive match against a quality side, so they decided to change things up and placed a stronger focus on their mental game.

The girls responded brilliantly, producing some great performances, and while the scoreboard didn't fall their way, there were many positives to take from the game.

Some well-connected passages of netball showed what this group is capable of when they trust the process and back each other.

Club 1: Sienna Sampson was outstanding at Goal Attack; she was a strong ball carrier throughout the game, worked tirelessly to create options in attack, and confidently put up shots whenever opportunities presented.

Club 2: Clodagh Way had an excellent game through the midcourt; her speed, acceleration onto the ball, and strong drives through the court created plenty of opportunities and helped keep the attacking end flowing.

Club 3: Kayley Butera was fantastic in defence; she dictated the contest with her opponents, applied relentless defensive pressure, and made the Roos defenders work together to continually challenge Raiders attacking unit.

The club is proud of the effort and determination shown by the girls.

Saturday’s performance gives plenty to build on as they continue to develop throughout the season.

Under 15s

Corowa Rutherglen 16 def by Raiders 75

Corowa Rutherglen’s Under 15s faced a tough challenge against a disciplined Wodonga Raiders outfit, who showed why they are among the competition’s finals contenders.

Despite the result, the Roos girls competed with determination and resilience throughout the match.

The defensive end worked tirelessly to apply pressure and contest every ball, while the goalers combined well with excellent rotations, creating strong attacking opportunities.

The team’s effort, teamwork, and willingness to keep fighting until the final whistle were a real credit.

Awards

Sportspower: Lucia McLellan had a strong performance at GA/GS, netting 13 of the team’s 16 goals.

Thrive: Elera Keys showed great composure at WA, using her speed to shake her defender and using her vision to feed the ball to the goalers.

Canteen: Bella Huggins displayed incredible movement in the goal ring, showcasing great thinking and creating space for her teammates.
