It was a bleak day for the Female Roos Open Women’s team on Sunday as they took on ladder leaders Lavington at John Foord Oval.
A sold start in the first quarter by the Roos was soon washed away after a 10-minute lapse in the second quarter allowed Lavington to pile on five unanswered goals.
Despite having only 17 players take the field due to injuries and unavailability, the determined Roos side came out after half time denying Lavington the ball who managed only two goals in a rain drenched third quarter.
The sun finally came out in the final quarter as players from both teams battled it out evenly on a boggy JC Lowe Oval.
The Roos finally scored their first goal halfway through the final quarter after a burst out of a tight contest from Hannah Loughnan saw her run around onto her left foot and boot a beautiful drop punt from 40 metres out.
Roos forward Jerrah Caruso is ambushed by during heavy rain by three Lavington players.
The Roos will now take on bottom placed side Thurgoona in this Sunday’s last round of the North-East and Border Female Football League.
All four Roos’ teams will play this Sunday, and they are expected to feature in the finals starting on Sunday, August 10.
