The Border Triathlon Squad in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Rutherglen and Destination Rutherglen present the 2025 Women’s Triathlon on Saturday, November 29 from the Rutherglen Pool on High Street.
Border Triathlon Squad Organisers Nadine Seymour and Jeremy Kent, who began the club after seeing there was nothing for younger children and the less experienced in the region, are excited about their first big local triathlon and urge any locals interested to get involved.
“This is the first big women’s event we have held,” Nadine said.
“So far we have been open for children and hosting duathlon and smaller triathlon monthly events for them but decided we wanted to create an event to promote women’s health.
“There is no stigma – it’s all inclusive. Participants can rock up with a mountain bike and any clothes that they feel comfortable in but that is still suitable for running, cycling and swimming components of the event.
“We are looking to have 200 women and 100 children involved with the events to kick off at 1pm. Children first, then the women in staged times from 3pm with short course first then long course from 3.30pm.
“Registrations are open and so far (as of Monday, Sept 22) 47 people are registered with some being from Melbourne and Geelong.
“We also have a DJ already set up so there will be a good atmosphere and we are hoping to have some wineries involved for tastings.”
Events available on the day include:
- Children (seven to nine, all genders): 500m run/ 2km bike/ 60m swim.
- Children (10 to 12, all genders): 1km run/ 5km bike/ 120m swim.
- Enticer (12+): 3km run/ 10km bike/ 200m swim with team category available.
- Sprint (16+): 6km run/ 20km bike/ 400m swim with team category available.
As stipulated by AusTriathlon rules, the children’s events will not be timed and all finishers will receive a medal upon crossing the finish line.
Team entries are also welcomed for the long course only.
The Border Triathlon Squad was set up in recent years as a training squad with the sport growing and the club hosting two duathlons to date which are getting more popular.
While Nadine and Jeremy are from Wodonga, the couple saw the draw of Rutherglen to host this inaugural event for its history with triathlons.
“Both Jeremy and myself are involved in triathlons and often have to travel to compete so we just wanted to bring affordable events to the region,” Nadine said.
“Our aim for the club and any future events is to be inclusive, affordable and available to anyone interested in the sport around the region.
“While this particular event is a women’s only event, we are looking into hosting further events for everybody to be involved in as we are a family friendly club and love to see the whole family get involved.
“Rutherglen was enticing due to the community as they used to host triathlons many years ago, and for its terrain, location and scenery making it a good draw card.
“We have some great sponsors on board in Buller Wines who have donated an accommodation prize as well as a monetary donation from Brian Unthank and Daisy Cow Soap and Skincare which have been amazing in assisting us with prize packs.
“Weekly training from will be held from October 8 with some former local triathletes on hand to provide pointers.”
