The Corowa Rutherglen Under 16s fought valiantly but ultimately fell short in their preliminary final against Wodonga at John Foord Oval on Sunday.
The Under 16s program was chasing its third grand final appearance in four seasons, highlighting the sustained success of the Roos’ junior football program.
Despite a slow start to the season, the Under 16s turned their campaign around with a barnstorming finish, sneaking into the top four following an enthralling win over Yarrawonga three weeks ago.
Played in bright sunshine, Wodonga burst from the blocks, putting the Roos defence under early pressure and getting the Bulldogs’ coaching staff up and about.
Corowa were led strongly in defence by Levi Arnold, who produced a stellar performance in his 100th junior club game.
The Roos soon settled, with Tommy Kafarela converting a handy major before a classy snap from Josh Parker lifted the vocal Corowa crowd and had the young Roos up and about heading into quarter-time.
The Roos had multiple entries inside 50 early in the second quarter but were unable to capitalise on the scoreboard. It would prove costly, with Wodonga transitioning the ball from coast to coast to kick two quick goals and extend its lead to 16 points.
Jake Witherden put his best foot forward as the Roos chased its third grand final appearance in four years but came up short after a phenomenal run to get to the preliminary final.
Josh Hunter and Ollie Cardile were strong around the contest and helped wrestle momentum back towards the Roos, reducing the margin to just four points.
The young Roos continued to combat the Wodonga outfit but were unable to turn their opportunities into scoreboard pressure as the Bulldogs continued to find ways forward.
The third quarter proved decisive, with Wodonga again pouncing and beginning to take control of the contest.
Nate Jones produced some classy play as he attempted to stem the bleeding and halt the Bulldogs’ run.
Although Wodonga ultimately steered its way to victory, there were plenty of individual efforts for the Roos to be proud of throughout the afternoon.
Hudson Kuschurt’s blazing speed through the middle provided a spark, while Cardile continued to work hard in front of goal.
Despite the disappointing result, the Roos can be proud of the hard work they put in throughout the season, particularly after overcoming their slow start to reach the preliminary final.
The season was led by club stalwart Darrell Spencer and Scott Parker, who helped guide the young group through another successful campaign.
