Magnificent weather greeted the Spiders as they chose to bat at Ball Park. Reliable bowler Joe Hansen wasted no time though, removing the dangerous Tim Seymour for a third-ball duck.
Kaelan Bradtke was then too quick for both Mount and Keenes, both trying to pull the young pacemen.
Joey then uprooted the off pole of Hoskin and the Spiders were languishing at 4/22. Some resistance from Dedic and Hobbs helped the cause before Luke Backhouse was rewarded for his very consistent season with a wicket. He finished 2/16 from another very tidy seven overs.
Kade Wilson’s re-emergence as a bowling option continued with 1/7 from four overs. Wickets were shared evenly before the Spiders were dismissed for 91 on the very flat wicket.
Captain Athanitis was after a quick win so the troops could enter the pink stumps fray but was out on the second ball for a duck. Kodee Lowe then played with unusual patience (11 from 41 balls) as he and then Kade Wilson (13 not out) partnered the rampaging Matt Grantham (56 from 89 balls) to complete what can only be described as an emphatic win.
Grantham pulled and cut with his usual authority to pass 50 for the fourth time this season (437 runs at 44).
The win ensures a home final on March 9 at Ball Park. The Roos travel to Dederang this weekend to take on the finals-bound Demons.
Scores: Howlong 10/91 (36 overs) – J Hansen 2/14, L Backhouse 2/16, K Bradtke 2/17, M Athanitis 1/20 def by Corowa 3/92 (26 overs) – AR Hoskin 1/9, MD Reid 1/25, D Keenes 0/24.
B Grade
B Grade has sealed third spot on the ladder with a 110-run victory over Howlong at Howlong.
Batting first, Corowa lost a wicket at 27, but with Aaron Phibbs taking his chance at the top of the order and with Greg Burgess in good form these two batted Howlong out of the game with a 137-run stand before Burgess went for a very well made 62 which included seven boundaries.
Phibbs was out shortly after for a brilliant knock of 73, which included seven boundaries and a six. When Luke Heagney went quickly Corowa had lost 3/1, but Scott Wilson and Will Seymour recovered well as Corowa finished their 40 overs at 4/233 with Wilson making a boundary filled innings of 50 not out (nine boundaries) while Seymour was 17 not out.
In reply, Greg Burgess made two early breakthroughs and when Aaron Phibbs joined in with two of his own Howlong had fallen to 4/23. Corowa was made to work for the next few wickets as Howlong moved the score along to 5/103 with a couple of overs remaining. Ryan Beveridge with 2/1 and Nash Lavis with his first wicket in senior cricket help bowl Howlong out on the last ball for 123.
Phibbs took 2/16 off eight overs while Burgess took 2/19 off eight overs. Youngster Patrick Lavis continued his good form with 2/16.
B Grade takes on Dederang at Ball Park this Saturday in the last game before finals.
