Skipper set to avoid punishment after Man Utd criticism

United suffered a catastrophic night in Lombardy with the humiliating 4-1 loss to Cesc Fabregas's Serie A high-flyers, their winless run extending to seven fixtures and leading to Fernandes publicly questioning the approach of boss Michael Carrick.

The result, alongside the comments from Fernandes, had raised serious questions about Carrick's future ahead of Sunday's Premier League home game against Bournemouth, but it's understood he will remain in charge.

United skipper Fernandes has been a pale imitation of last season's performer so far this term, and questioned Carrick's tactics as another Champions League trip ended with an eye-catching post-match player interview following on from last week's remarks by Lisandro Martinez.

Fernandes claimed it was the staff's decision "not to press man-to-man and sometimes leave a little bit of space in behind" in Como.

Yet it's understood United won't punish Fernandes for his impassioned post-match interview a week on from Martinez's caustic remarks, which led to a fine, talks with the club hierarchy and an apology.

Fernandes returned from Italy with the squad in the early hours of Thursday morning and had to deal with a robbery at his house that took place while he was overseas.

Fernandes' family are understood not to have been in the house at the time and police quickly attended the scene, with United supporting their skipper.
