Hannah Lewry decided to participate in the fundraiser after her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“She has just started her chemo treatments, so I decided to participate in raising any money I possibly could for cancer research,” Hannah told The Free Press.
Hannah has lived in Howlong all her life and works at Rivalea.
“I have grown up on a farm, so I love animals and motorbike riding. I play guitar in my spare time.”
Initially, the 18-year-old set herself a target of raising $500 and was surprised by how quickly the money began to roll in.
“After three hours of uploading the fundraiser link to Facebook, I hit $660. People just kept donating,” Hannah said.
“It is so rewarding to see everyone in the community be so supportive and continue to donate to such a good cause. I am excited for the month to begin.”
Dry July is an annual event in which people give up alcohol for 31 days to raise vital funds for cancer research. This year, the foundation has introduced ‘Dry(ish) July, an option for people to choose how long they go dry in the month of July.
