Upon hearing of the impending visit by Senior Constable Les Crofts, the pre-school’s 40 preps built a big wooden block police station which contained various forms of communication equipment, including an old style telephone, a mobile phone, a two-way radio and a lap top computer.
Local police officers from Corowa and Howlong have commenced informal visits to local schools as part of the Murray River District Police ‘Adopt A Cop’ program.
The program encourages police to adopt a school and conduct visits, providing an opportunity for positive interaction between police and students from pre-school to Year 12.
This informal approach is designed to be a positive step towards breaking down barriers in a safe and secure environment, and build relationships between young people and police.
All pre, primary and secondary schools in Corowa and Howlong, Rand, Brocklesby, Lowesdale, Walbundrie and Burrumbuttock have been allocated a local officer.
Corowa Pre-School teacher Richelle Francis said the children love having visits from emergency services personnel.
“The children were so looking forward to this police visit with Senior Constable Crofts they really enjoyed making a police station as their welcome to him,” Ms Francis told The Free Press. And Senior Constable Crofts appreciated the welcome and time spent with the children.
