Mr Kruger has served on the board since RBA was established in 2022, helping guide the organisation through its formative years and shaping its long-term vision for Australian rice growers.
RBA chair Dr Steve Jefferies paid tribute to Mr Kruger's contribution to both the organisation and the wider rice industry.
“On behalf of the board, I want to sincerely thank Graeme for his support, guidance and vision during his time as a director,” Dr Jefferies said.
“Graeme has been a strong advocate for the need for transformational change in the water productivity of Australian rice through world class plant breeding. He brought a clear grower perspective and deep understanding of the Australian rice industry to the Board table.
“His invaluable contribution has helped set Australian rice breeding up well for the long-term future of our local rice industry, and we wish him all the very best for his future endeavours.”
Mr Vagg brings extensive experience in both farming and the rice industry.
In addition to running his own farming enterprise, Mr Vagg previously worked as operations and technical services manager with SunRice.
He has also built a strong reputation for his focus on innovation, productivity and sustainability.
Awarded a Nuffield Scholarship in 2013, Mr Vagg travelled to California, the United Kingdom, France, Egypt, Turkey, India and the Philippines to investigate value-adding opportunities and alternative uses for rice straw.
He has also participated in NSW DPI on-farm rice agronomy and nitrogen management trials and received a special industry award for producing the highest-yielding Koshihikari rice crop in 2024.
Dr Jefferies said Mr Vagg's practical and international experience would be a valuable addition to the board.
“We're delighted to welcome Antony to the Board,” he said.
“Well known across the industry, he is a highly respected grower with a genuine passion for research and innovation, understanding firsthand how new varieties perform in the paddock.
“His practical experience, business acumen and international perspective will be a real asset to RBA as we continue to deliver varieties that improve productivity and profitability for Australian growers.”
Mr Vagg's appointment took effect in mid-September and comes as RBA continues its work developing new rice varieties aimed at improving productivity and profitability for Australian growers.
