Applications for permits can be made through the Fire Permits Victoria website at firepermit.vic.gov.au or by calling 1800 668 511.

Landowners must not leave a fire unattended as it could result in damage to or destruction of life and property, and there are responsibilities when burning off.

“Lighting a fire in the open without a permit is an offence and could bring a hefty penalty,” assistant chief fire officer Tony Owen said.

“Under the Summary Offences Act, there is the risk of a fine, twelve months imprisonment or both for people who do not abide by the act.

“It is important that all landholders are aware of their responsibilities.”

Any permits issued during the current conditions include, as a minimum requirement, 3000 litres of water over two vehicles with a flashing amber light being displayed on at least one vehicle, three adults in attendance, a four-metre break around the perimeter and four metres around any trees or stands of trees in the area being burnt.

No area greater than 100ha can be burnt at once and light up time is not before 6pm.
