With the station getting a range of changes to facilitate the Inland Rail Project, BBR has been keen to provide input in areas its members feel are important.
BBR president Suzie Pearce said that after the site is redeveloped, there will insufficient parking close to the station doors.
“That area will have become a large landscaped forecourt,” she said.
An Inland Rail Spokesperson said it has worked extensively with community, stakeholders and technical specialists to develop, review and determine the best solution for the Benalla Railway Station precinct.
“The final design of the station precinct separates railway passengers exiting the station from traffic and improves safety for all users of the station,” the spokesperson said.
“Passengers will be able to walk seamlessly from the station to the nearby pick-up zone and waiting buses without interacting with moving traffic.
“New drop-off and pick-up zones will be 36 metres along a direct pathway from the station.
“The greatly improved pedestrian underpass will be served by stairs, ramps, and lifts, enhancing the connectivity to and from the station and the platforms for all users of the new station.
“The final design of the station precinct also increases parking capacity from around 38 spaces to 50, with disability parking and priority drop-off bays positioned as close to the station as possible.”
Ms Pearce said BBR made submissions that included a concept plan to all levels of Government seeking support for its preferred plans.
“It is now up to the community to contact their politicians, especially Catherine King, Federal Minister responsible for the Inland Rail Project (Minister.King@mo.infrastructure.gov.au) and make their demand for changes heard,” she said.
