While stronger than normal winds, rain and an icy blast hit Deniliquin and district on Wednesday as predicted, we appeared to have escaped most of the wild weather predicted to hit the Riverina region.

The SES put out an alert on Tuesday, urging the Riverina region to brace for potentially damaging conditions.
When you looked at the weather maps during the weather event, Deni seemed to be in the eye of a storm cell.
The storm did encompass much of NSW, and got wild enough in other areas for a tornado to form near Forbes.
Wind gusts got up to 48km/h in Deniliquin on Wednesday, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s airport weather station recorded only 1.4mm of rain.
In the outlying farming areas, though, more was recorded.
Finley-based independent agriculture consultant said it was patchy across his coverage area.
“I was a little disappointed on measuring 9.5mm, but when added to Monday's 7.5mm the total is 17mm,” Mr Lacy said yesterday.
“With the rain unusually coming in from the east, I expect the rainfall will be higher to the east and I hope that includes the dam catchments.
“I have heard from Blighty that there was 10mm Monday and 6mm from Wednesday, to total 16mm, but not much in Deni.
“A farmer from Oaklands had 4mm Monday and 24mm Wednesday, totalling 28mm, and I heard Berrigan had 19mm.
“Hopefully more will be coming in next 1-2 weeks.”
Mystery fish
Living in a rural area, coming across roadkill is almost inevitable.
It even happens in town sometimes, especially when those pesky ducks don’t get off the road in time.
But locals were taken back a little when they found a carp in the middle of the road in Junction St yesterday morning.
It was not far away from the Poictiers St intersection.
As per our previous snippet, we don’t think the weather was wild enough to displace a fish of about 50cm.
Perhaps some angler dropped their catch on the way home.
Elders grudge match tonight
Remember to head on down to Hardnge St Oval from 5pm tonight for the Elders State of Origin NSW versus Vic football match.
Elders staff from both states will go head-to-head in a friendly but competitive match, with the NSW team including several from Deniliquin and Finley.
Following the game, there will be a sportsman’s night in the clubrooms, featuring VFL/AFL legends Doug Hawkins and Anthony Stevens.
An auction to benefit Deniliquin Can Assist will also be held.
Tickets are $10 for adults, with under-18s able to attend for free.
It allows entry to watch the game from 5pm, and the sportsman’s night from 7.30pm.
A barbecue dinner and drinks are available at your own cost.
Charity bowls on Sunday
The other charity event being held this weekend is the Murray River Police District social bowls day on Sunday.
The day kicks off with a barbecue lunch from noon, followed by friendly bowls play until around 4pm.
Entry is $20 per person, which includes lunch, and you can register as a team of four or individually to be placed in a team.
Proceeds will go to the Deniliquin Mental Health Awareness Group, supporting its mission to train more locals in mental health first aid.
Deniliquin Police Sergeant Morgan Hadjialexiou said it’s the first time the event is being held in Deniliquin, after two successful years in Mulwala.
Registrations close today, and entry fees can be paid on the day. To register, call the club on 5881 1348 or email hadj1mor@police.nsw.gov.au.
SASS week at Deni North
Last week was SASS Week (School Administration and Support Staff), with most local schools hosting celebrations.
Deni North School reached out to PTee to share that it presented all SASS staff with thank you bags filled with thoughtful goodies put together by the teaching staff.
They were presented during morning assembly Wednesday last week, a touching tribute to important members of the school community.
Those who could not be there on the day received their gifts over the coming days.
Tennis starts
Although rain stopped practice on Wednesday, the Deniliquin Lawn Tennis Club are still encouraging locals to come and have a hit.
Each Wednesday, from 6 to 7pm, people of any age and ability are encouraged to go to 439 Charlotte St and give tennis a go.
Keep an eye on the club's Facebook page for any updates at https://www.facebook.com/denitennis.
