U3A stands for University of the Third Age, and it’s an international movement with an aim to educate and stimulate mainly retired members of the community — those in their ‘third age’ of life.
Deniliquin U3A is made up of mature aged people who either want to continue learning or being active.
Classes and programs run each weekday during the NSW public school term, and are led by locals who would like to teach others what they know.
This term, they include walking groups, writing groups, exercise classes, and discussions groups, visiting guest speakers and field trips.
There are also sessions on singing, using Apple products, art, history, ukulele, knitting, and crochet and several sessions dedicated to games and card games for social connection.
Previously held mainly at the Intereach Neighbourhood Centre, classes are now mostly held at the Deniliquin RSL Club.
A partnership with Intereach has been re-forged this term, as it’s the location of the Elderfit program on Tuesdays.
Other sessions not held at the RSL are the walking group, which meets at Memorial Park on Monday mornings, and the ukulele class which meets at South West Music on Wednesdays.
The RSL will be the venue for next week’s anniversary morning tea, which will be held Thursday, August 27 from 10am.
“Anyone is welcome to come along, we only ask that they RSVP to Sue Gatacre on 0419536738 by this Friday, August 21, long-time U3A member Gayle Beckton said.
“Cost of $5 per head and members are encouraged to bring a friend.
“Come along and share your stories of your involvement with U3A in Deniliquin - it should be a fun morning.”
