Deniliquin’s latest centenarian, was born on September 19, 1925 on a farm in Urana.
She was one of six children, growing up alongside three brothers and two sisters.
Her early years were spent on the family dairy farm, later moving to Deniliquin to live in the “down south” property known as ‘Engard’.
It was here that Ruby’s lifelong connection to the land and her community began to flourish.
Her working life included time at what she refers to as ‘The Dublin Pub’, where she sold dresses, manchester, children’s clothing, and linen in a job that blended practicality with style and service.
In 1948, Ruby married Neil McMillan, and the couple settled into their home at 112 Hunter St, Deniliquin. There they raised five children - Ian, Ken, Glenys, Jenny, and Sue.
Her children attended the George St and Sloane St schools, and Ruby remained a devoted mother and homemaker throughout their upbringing.
In 1972, Ruby and Neil moved to Barham, where Neil established the town’s ambulance service.
Ruby quickly became a fixture in the local bowls scene, earning a reputation not just for her love of the sport, but for her competitive edge.
“She loved to win,” her children recalled with a laugh.
Ruby herself proudly stated, “I won 10 championships” across the Deni RSL and Barham tournaments.
Ruby and Neil returned to Deniliquin in 1984, eventually settling in Wood St, where they lived until Neil’s passing, August 3, 2008.
Ruby continued to live there independently until last year, when she became a resident at Orana Southern Cross Care.
In those years, Ruby’s family has grown to include 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, making her the head of a legacy that spans five generations.
Ruby attributes her longevity to a simple belief passed down through palmistry.
“I was told years ago that the lines on my hand meant I would live a long life,” she said, showing a line that runs from her palm all the way to her wrist.
As she celebrates her centenary, Ruby McMillan acknowledges the life she has lead and looks forward to birthdays in the future.
“I’m in good health, and have never worried.”
Ruby celebrated her birthday with family and friends at the Deniliquin Golf Club on Sunday. Turn to page 6 for the photos.
