Slow down in your street

Redlands Rd, Cemetery Rd, Whitehead St, Bullecourt Rd and Tower St are being targetted by police for speeding but Federation Council is asking you to nominate your street in a program designed to help reduce speeding in residential areas.

Apart from hurting your hip pocket when you get caught, speeding presents a danger to the driver, passengers and the wider community, with each kilometre over the limit reducing your ability to pull up in time to avoid a crash.

Corowa Police Sargeant Steve Marshall said, even with a higher police presence around town, there had been an increased number of driving-related offences.

“Redlands Rd, Cemetery Rd, Whitehead St, Bullecourt Rd and Tower St are the areas we target,” Sgt Marshall said.

“We're aware that people speed everywhere around town, even with the increased number of highway patrols around.

“Because of the fatal car crashes that we had in January, they've seen a need to increase the presence of highway patrol here.

“It’s not a case of ‘if’ you’ll get caught, but when, so just don’t do it.”

In an effort to help combat the problem, Federation Council is asking residents to nominate local streets for portable speed boards and ‘Slow Down’ signage to prompt speed demons to slow down and take care when driving around town.

The ongoing program gives residents who have concerns about the way people drive in their street the chance to have their say.

Residents can fill out the online ‘speed program street nomination form’ found on the Speed Zones page of Council’s website under the ‘Living Here’ tab.
