Corowa rowers made the long-awaited return to rowing with COVID-19 restrictions finally allowing the club to compete at the 155th Murray Rowing Association Regatta over the weekend.

The club had entries in all classes from under 15, Open and Masters events coming away with 17 wins to finish second overall and retain the M.R.A shield.
The female Under 15 events saw the Corowa scullers come away with all four events on offer. The standout was Sommers Hogan who featured in all four wins. Sommers teamed with Eva Broad to claim the double scull on Saturday.
The crews changed on Sunday with Imogen Tomlinson Rowing in the double with Sommers to take out the final. Sommers won the single scull both days with Eva claiming 2nd on Saturday and the club winning the trifecta on Sunday with Sommers, Imogen and
Eva filling the first three places in the final.The Clubs junior girls Emily Tidd, Bella Heagney, Clancy Tomlinson and Adelaide Robb competed in the Under 17 and D grade events with great success.
Bella and Clancy raced in the U17 single both days rowing well and finishing 2nd in the finals against 20 of the best junior scullers in the state.
Clancy teamed with Adelaide to make the U17 double scull final both days to finish strongly and learn a lot for the remaining regattas.
The girls competed in the D grade events with great success. Adelaide won the D grade single both days with Emily also taking the win on Saturday against a large field requiring two divisions. Bella and Emily teamed up in the double scull finishing 2nd Saturday and claiming the win on Sunday.
The girls teamed up to row the quad scull with new coxswain Ash Willett competing in her 1st regatta. The crew under Ash’s steering did a great job to win the heat and go on to win the final and her 1st medal.
The crew raced on Sunday with the club’s other new coxswain Maddy Ryan taking control in the coxswain seat. The crew continued their great form to back up Saturdays win by taking out Sundays final and a real confidence boost for the 2 new coxswains.
The three Under 15 girls teamed with Susie Scott in the D grade quad to finish 2nd in the heat Saturday. The crew continued their great racing by winning the heat Sunday and finishing 3rd in the final.
The extra racing for these young girls and coxswains Ash and Maddy will be a great learning experience for the rest of the season.
Liz Sandow raced in the D grade single, improving with each race finished strongly over the 800m course. Liz teamed with Tamasin Burch on Saturday for the D grade double, with limited time in the boat the crew finished well to claim 2nd in the heat.
Liz teamed with Georgina Pearsall on Sunday and showed how well they rowed together by winning the heat to make the final to finish in 3rd place.The D grade boys had a great regatta with Spencer Holland claiming the D grade single scull both days. Brodie Julian and Lachie Hogan rowed strongly in their singles and they will be better for the extra racing. Spencer and Brodie raced the double and improved with every race and to set them up for a great row in their quad scull.
The quad featured Spencer, Brodie, Lachie, Alex Schultz Cox Adelyn Holland.
The crew had a great battle on Saturday to finish 2nd in the heat to make the final. In a real race down the course the crew closed the gap to finish in 2nd place. The Sunday racing saw the crew take the win in the heat and move into the final. Improving with each race the crew took the lead early to claim a great win against strong opposition.The Master Ladies competed in singles doubles and quad sculls. The quad feature Julie Underwood, Susie, Liz, Tamasin with Ash and Maddy coxswain over the two days.
The quad rowed well together in tight racing the crew finished in 3rd place. Julie and Susie took out the double scull event both days while Julie won the single on Sunday.The mixed events saw Corowa have crews entered in the double and quad sculling events. Bradley Pearsall teamed with Abby Richards to show the hard work on the water paid off, by taking the win on Saturday and finishing a close 2nd on Sunday.
Tamasin and Alex raced together and improved over the two days, 4th in the heat on Saturday and 2nd on Sunday. The crews teamed up in the quad scull with Adelyn to win the heat and finish a close 2nd in the final. Georgina replaced Tamasin on Sunday to continue the great rowing to make the final and finish strongly in 2nd place.
The club had two open scullers entered with Bradley Pearsall competing both days. Coming back into the sport after university, Brad worked hard winning his heat on Saturday to finish 3rd in the final. Sunday featured Brad and Georgina in the open sculls with Brad finishing in 2nd place and Georgina 3rd in a hotly contested event.
The entered an Open Quad on Sunday with Emily, Bella, Abby teaming with Sarah from Barwon who trained with us over the winter months.
With coxswain Maddy in control the quad had a great race for the first time in the boat together to finish 2nd in the final.After a huge weekend by all our members and rowers who attended a special thanks to Scotchy, Helen Holland, Ian MacDonald, all the parents and to our newest coach Matt Bell who joins the club from Rockhampton.
Matt’s experience in coaching junior and senior rowers will be invaluable as we prepare for the upcoming State Championships in Nagambie.
The club’s rowers and coxswains have had their first regatta since March 2020 and now the set their sights on the major regattas coming up.
