The Tigers ended the Purples’ premiership charge at Finley Recreation Reserve on Saturday, prevailing 14.11 (95) to 10.12 (72) to keep their hopes of back-to-back flags alive.
It sets up a tantalising decider at Moama Recreation Reserve, with Cobram and Congupna preparing to meet on grand final day for the second successive year.
Cobram got the better of The Road in the 2025 decider to claim the premiership and will now look to repeat the feat and retain its crown.
There is another layer to this year’s showdown, too.
Congupna and Cobram finished first and second respectively at the end of the 2026 home-and-away campaign, before The Road edged the Tigers by just three points, 9.9 (63) to 9.6 (60), in their second semi-final.
That result sent Congupna directly through to the grand final and forced the reigning premier into a preliminary-final showdown with Nathalia. Cobram duly answered the challenge.
There was nothing between the Tigers and Purples early at Finley, with the sides locked at 3.2 (20) apiece at quarter-time.
But Cobram began to make its move in the second term, booting five goals to Nathalia’s two to establish a 19-point half-time advantage.
The Tigers continued to turn the screw after the main break, adding another four majors in the third quarter and taking a commanding 12.10 (82) to 8.6 (54) lead into the final change.
Nathalia refused to go quietly and edged the final term, but the damage had been done as Cobram closed out a 23-point victory and secured the opportunity to defend its premiership.
Ben Ryan was instrumental in the victory with six goals for the Tigers, while Tyron Baden booted three.
Bowen Calogero, Eamon Hyde, Perry Lewis-Smith, Bailey Roberts and Jackson Trengove also hit the scoreboard, as Nathalia vice-captain Liam Evans did his best to keep the Purples’ season alive with four goals.
The defeat brought Nathalia’s campaign to an end after it finished fourth during the home-and-away season.
For Cobram, however, the stage is now set for another chapter in its rivalry with Congupna.
The Road was the competition’s dominant home-and-away outfit, finishing on top with a 16-1-1 record and 66 points, while Cobram finished second at 13-5, ahead of third-placed Mulwala on percentage.
Congupna has already demonstrated how little separates the sides by winning their semi-final by three points, but this time Cobram will have both revenge and history on its mind.
The Tigers conquered The Road when the premiership was on the line 12 months ago.
Now the same two clubs will return to grand final day, with Congupna seeking to turn the tables and Cobram attempting to make it consecutive Murray League flags.
The 2026 Murray Football League senior grand final will be played at Moama Recreation Reserve on Saturday, September 19, from 2.30pm.
