On a very wet and gloomy Sunday, Corowa Cougars travelled to Sarvaas Park in North Albury to officially kick off Round 1 where we played against Wodonga Wombats.

Both men’s and women’s Cougars, alongside their coaches and club supporters, wore black armbands to commemorate those we love and respect dearly who have now passed (in honour of Laurie “Chook” Webb and father of men’s player Abimelech Terry).
The Cougars would like to say a big thank you to all our sponsors for the 2026 season

The Cougars got off to a decent start and had good field position, but a lost ball would prove costly with the Wombats going up the field and scoring off a low kick.
The Wombats tags seemed to be glued on, but the Cougars ladies last ditch defence was extraordinary.
They never gave up and while the 50/50 calls continually went against them, they continued to shine.
Poor ball control would ultimately cost them with another Wombats try seconds before half time.
The girls regrouped and came up with a plan for the second half.
Their combinations grew, play started to flow a little easier and after some much needed ball in the second half the ladies got their deserved try through a great run from Mercy.
The ladies team continues to grow in confidence, and after their second match together there were a lot of positives to take away from the game.
The ladies head to Glenrowan next week to take on the Bears.

Men’s Report
Corowa 10 def by Wodonga 44
The Cougars men in prayer before the game in honour of Abimelech Terry.
A sluggish start from the Cougars side allowed the Wombats to gain an early advantage, capitalising on our lack of intensity in the opening exchanges.
However, a series of strong efforts through the middle helped wrestle back momentum, with the team responding well to post two tries and put themselves back in contention.
Defensively, there were plenty of positives to take away, with sustained periods of disciplined and committed defence laying a solid platform for future performances.
Unfortunately, fatigue over the final 10 minutes saw the scoreline blow out, failing to accurately reflect what was otherwise a competitive contest.
With five starting players unavailable, the team showed resilience and belief and remains confident of being highly competitive in the coming weeks as the squad returns to full strength.
