Corowa rowers were greeted by stellar conditions in Nagambie for the two-day regatta last weekend.

The first day’s competition was over the 2,000m course, featuring Emily Tidd and Adelaide Robb in the single sculls and Bella Heagney teamed with Emily in the double scull.
First competitor was Adelaide who stepped up to row the Open Light Weight single scull. In her first race in a single over the 2,000m course, Adelaide held her own against her older opposition to finish strongly in fourth place. The race is a great lead into the next few weeks as Adelaide aims for the Under 17 events at the Nationals in Sydney.
Emily was in the Open School girl single needing a top two finish in her heat to make the final. Emily rowed a great race and in a tight battle over the last 250m Emily fell just short to finish third. The race was a great opportunity for Emily to show her training is paying off leading into the State Championships in Ballarat and the Head of the School Girls in Geelong.
The afternoon racing featured Emily and Bella in the U19 double scull. The race featured two City Doubles just returned from the NSW State Championships. The Corowa double got out fast and were even at the 1000m mark. As the pace picked up, the Yarra double made their move to take the lead with Corowa splitting the two city crews to take second place. Overall a great day of racing and learning as the rest of the Club arrives for Sundays 1000m races.
The prediction of calm conditions came true for the morning events on Sunday. The first crew on the water was a new combination in the B grade quad.
Julie Underwood teamed with Emily, Bella, Eva Broad and coxswain Maddy Rayan. Needing a top three finish in the heat the Corowa rowed a well-timed race to take the win.
The final featured six starters with a close race all the way the Corowa crew finished in third place.
The young B grade double combination of Spencer Holland and Brodie Julian line up in the 5-crew final. The boys gained invaluable race experience to finish in second place.
Corowa had two crews in the Female C grade double scull. The crews featured Tamasin Burch and Liz Sandow while Tink’s Hamilton combined with Anastasia McFarlane. The crews lined up against each other in the heat also needing a top three finish to make the final.
In a close race the Corowa crews moved to the lead with Tink’s and Anastasia coming away with a 5 second win. The final was another great battle as the Corowa crews again took the lead and closing the gap with each stroke Tamasin and Liz fell just short by half a second. The win by Anastasia and Tink’s was their first win and a great confidence builder for the State Championships.
Adelaide Robb featured in the Under 17 and B grade single sculls. As the wind picked up Adelaide had 4 strong rows over the 1,000m course claiming a close 2nd in the U17 single and a fighting finish in the B grade single to claim 3rd in the final.
Adelaide is improving with each row and will be working hard at training to keep improving leading into the State Championships.
The club’s youngest rowers featured in the Under 15 single and double sculls. These events are a great introduction into the 1000m racing. The single sculling events featured Sommers Hogan, Sienna McFarlane and Maci Coats. For Maci and Sienna, it was their first race over the 1000m Nagambie course.
Sommers took the lead in the final featuring 6 scullers. Sommers showed her experience to lead all the way while Maci finished 4th and Sienna in 5th place.
The double sculls saw Sommers team with Sienna while Maci rowed with Maddy Ryan. It was a great race as 3 doubles made their way down the course as Sommers and Sienna claimed the win while Maci and Maddy finished in third place, a great achievement by the young crew.
The in-form mixed double combination of Abby Richards and Brad Pearsall showed their class to win comfortably in the heat and continue their great form to claim the win in the final.
The Male C grade quad crew featured Liam Fitzgerald, Brodie Julian, Erik Hogan, Lachie Hogan with Will Hogan the coxswain. With two heats the Corowa boys took the lead and claimed the win making their way to the 6-crew final. In a great battle down the course with the Gippsland Grammar crew and the Corowa boys raced to the line to fall short by the narrowest of margins.
The female beginner quad featured Anastasia, Tinks, Marlee Julian, Maddison Pasqualotto coxswain Dakota Good. This event gave our first-year rowers a great racing opportunity. In a close race the crew had a mishap as the oar struck a buoy causing the oar to dislodge at the 500m mark. The crew showed great determination to return to racing and finish the race in second place.
Lachie Hogan lined up in the B grade single his first time racing the single for the year. Lachie was in control of his heat to lead all the way for the win. The final saw the standard pick up as Lachie raced strongly to finish in 5 place.
The C grade single sculling event was an opportunity for our school rowers get Some great race experience over the 1000m course for the upcoming schoolgirl races in Geelong.
Maddison Pasqualotto was having her first race in the single scull, in tough conditions she followed instructions to finish in seventh place.
Imogen Tomlinson was keen to race and test herself over the course to finish in fourth place.
Eva Broad was determined to show the hard work at training was working as she claimed the win in the heat to move through to the final. Eva was struggling early sitting in fifth place before she made her move. Working through the field with each stroke Eva finished strongly in second place.
The mixed quad saw Brad and Abby team with Tamasin, Alex Schultz and coxswain Dakota. In a straight final the crew work well together against strong competition to finish in second place.
The club entered two Female C grade quads with the Beginner quad lining up against Clancy Tomlinson, Imogen Tomlinson, Eva Broad, Liz Sandow and Cox Dakota Good. The beginner crew was determined to improve on their earlier row. The two Corowa crews lined up in the heat as Clancy’s crew took the lead to finish first with the beginner crew improving on their earlier race to finish in third place and a spot in the final.
The pace lifted in the final with both Corowa crews racing well with Clancy’s crew finishing in fourth place while the beginner crew finished in fifth place.
The much-improved C grade double crew of Liam Fitzgerald and Erik Hogan raced strongly to finish the heat in second place. Throwing out the challenge to the heat winner the Corowa combination rowed a well-timed race to record a much-deserved win in the final.
The club entered two doubles in the Female A grade event. The Two crews lined up against each other in the heat, with Emily and Bella lining up against Julie Underwood and Sommers Hogan. In a close battle down the course Emily’s crew held on for a close win over their crew mates. In the final with nothing to lose, Julie and Sommers turned the tables on their crew mates to finish in fourth place while Emily and Bella finished fifth.
The final race of the day was the mixed 8 featuring Abby, Tamasin, Liz, Tinks, Brad, Spencer, Alex, Lachie with Dakota the coxswain. The final featured 4 eights with the favourites Mercantile taking the lead while Corowa had a battle with Hawthorn for third and fourth place. It was a real battle as the Corowa crew mad a last effort to fish third just before the line.
It was a great weekends of racing as it sets the club up for the State Championships in Ballarat first weekend in March.
A big few weeks coming up as the clubs’ junior schoolgirls head to Geelong for the Junior State Championships next weekend.
