Friday afternoon bowls
Hold tight - we’re checking permissions before loading more content
The weather was much kinder this week, and the C green was filled with enthusiastic bowlers on Friday, July 10.
A total of 22 bowlers enjoyed two games of eight ends, with most games played as drawn pairs.
Congratulations to Elaine Hall and David Murray, the only pair to win both of their games. They finished the afternoon with an impressive eight shots up.
Drawn pairs will be run again on Friday, July 17.
Those wishing to play are requested to put names on the list in the foyer by 12pm.
- First prize - $5 drinks voucher.
- $5 entry.
Indoor bowls
Monday evening, July 6, saw a great turnout, with both mats filled and 13 bowlers enjoying an evening of friendly competition and good fellowship.
Congratulations to Anton Gusak, Joan Limbrick, and Bert Smolenaars, who combined well to finish as the night’s winning team. Well done to all three on an excellent performance.
No indoor bowls took place on Monday, July 13.
With the club hosting a number of wakes, it is not practical to be re-arranging furniture and putting out the equipment several times.
Many of our indoor bowlers and organisers also volunteer with catering, bar duties, and venue preparation, and their assistance is greatly appreciated during this busy period.
Indoor bowls will resume on Monday July 20 at 7pm. Bowlers are asked to be there by 6.45pm.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support. We look forward to seeing everyone back on the mats on July 20.
Wakes
The club hosted two wakes last week.
The generosity of many members is appreciated – catering and bar staff, along with everyone else who pitched in to make sure that both inside the club house and the outside surrounds looked presentable.
This coming week, there will be another two wakes.
Wednesday – Kevin Dobson and Thursday – Wayne Morris.
Once again, many members have put their hands up to assist in the running of these events.
These two men are well respected within the community and will be sorely missed. Condolences are offered to both of their families.
Members will note that the club’s flag is at half-mast – this is a sign of respect in particular for Kevin, who has been a long standing member of the bowls club for many valuable years.
Right up until a couple of months ago, Kevin could be seen at the club catching up with mates and showing a keen interest in what was happening on the greens.
Shelters
The shelters that cover the seats, along the Northern end of the greens, have been lifted once again for the cooler months.
Thank you to the men who assisted in this necessary job.
Bar duty
Monday – Thursday 5 – 6.30pm.
13 — 16 July - J. McCallum and B. Major.
20 – 23 July - D. Murray and M. MacRaild.
27 — 30 July - T. Quinlan and Octavia.
Lockington Bowls Club
The popular game of scrounge just keeps on attracting quality fields each Wednesday and Saturday, despite some ordinary weather.
On Wednesday, the bowlers were greeted by dense foggy conditions but the fog disappeared shortly after play started.
Rink one resulted in a close finish with Ray Hanson amassing 47 points to win ahead of Pos Andrea, 46, while Donna Hart scored a fine 32 points.
Rink two belonged to Terrill Westwood, producing a well-structured 51 points to lead the rink home ahead of Rod Fiedler, 45, and John Andrea, 39.
Saturday brought a mixture of conditions with three rinks in operation, before a shower caused a break in proceedings until the sunshine broke through.
Ashley Dobell took home the chocolates on rink one after bowling in brilliant fashion to tally 45 points, with Anthony Westwood claiming second place on 34 points, closely followed by Lorraine Appleby, 31, and Rod Fiedler, 29 points.
Next door, Pos Andrea displayed exceptional talent to score a total of 51 points and take home the cakes, while Terrill Westwood was in fine form for 36 points.
John Andrea showed glimpses of form to register a total 35 points.
On the final rink Natalie McLaughlin had a field day in scoring 44 points to score narrowly from Leanne McInnes, 38, and Ray Hanson, 28 points, in a bit of a rough day.
Scrounge will continue on a Wednesday and Saturday each week during the pennant off-season.
Members are reminded of the practice match against Gunbower Bowling Club on September 20 at Gunbower. Mark your calendar.

Regular Wednesday visitor, Lockington's Ray Brereton, won with 22 stableford points over the front nine.
Runner-up on a four-way countback was Les Hedington from Kevin MacCormack, Robert Vise, and Bruce Bryant, all on 19 points.
Our efficient treasurer knows how to work the numbers, and last Friday, Julie Leahy scored a great 43 stableford points to easily win from new golfer Sally Parker on a very credible 37 points.
Nearest the pins on the third, eighth, and 16th second shot all went to Louise Williams.
A 9-hole event was also held, with Kirstie Gebbie on 15 points and Janet Sinclair on 12 points.
Chris Eeles and Steve Bubb have been busy over the last few weeks relocating all the front nine holes.
Looking at last Saturday's results, most of the field couldn't find them except for Brent Sweeney, whose great score of +6 easily won the par event.
Runner-up on a countback was president Lee Hicks, followed by Shane Bywaters, Darcy Pump, and Jake Wright, all on +2.
Murray Schier finished square with the card. Schier was closest to the pin on the 16th while Wright took the honours on the fifth and for his second shot to the 18th hole.
The club has been selected to run both the Golf Central Victorian Sand Green Championship (August 2) and the very prestigious Victorian Sand Green Championship over the weekend of August 22 and 23, with a social 4BBB played on the Friday prior.
Golfers from all over Victoria, including some metropolitan clubs, will be represented; up to 100 golfers are expected to travel and stay in town over the weekend. Please make them welcome.

July 10 – Stableford
After a cold start to the day, the ladies enjoyed good winter weather and an enjoyable hit.
The Lockington Foodworks Supermarket Player of the Day voucher for best on course was won by Pauline Humbert with a really solid 35 points; her 20 points on the inside nine was especially good.
Nearest the pin: Angela Bacon.
July 11 – Stroke
Despite the rotten weather there was a good turnout, with golfers looking forward to having a hit after the course was too wet for play last week.
First up after a few months in Tasmania, Ash Portwine was best on course with a brilliant round of 72-6-66 to win the monthly medal, Privilege Cup, and Lockington Foodworks Player of the Day voucher.
In a day of good scoring, Ash also won division one ahead of Gary Milligan (75-8-67), Kevin Humbert (79-11-68), and Terry Thomas (78-9-69).
Division two was won by the in-form Tony Brooke (107-35-72) on a countback from Neil Maddison (86-14-72).
Gartside Cup qualifiers: Ash Portwine, Gary Milligan, Terry Thomas; standby – Neil Maddison.
Nearest the pins: 17th – Terry Thomas; second shot 13th – Grant Humbert, Jeff Carnie; second shot 18th for the six-pack smack – Steve Holt.
Spike’s Longest Drive on the fourth, sponsored by Hot ‘n’ Cold Plumbing – Gary Milligan (he took on the trees and won), Trav Mancer, and Tony Brooke.
Great to welcome Hip Pocket Echuca (Chad Jones) on board as the new sponsor of the Eagles Nest on the third, but it wasn’t won this week.
Captain Grant’s yardstick on the 16th wasn’t won either, but it has cracked the $100 prize barrier.
Terry Thomas took Tony Brooke on in a quarter-final of the Handicap Matchplay Championships, with the challenge of having to give him 26 shots.
The first four holes were split before Terry took the lead with pars to win the fifth, sixth and ninth to be three-up after nine.
Terry’s good round continued with pars on the 10th and 11th to halve those holes.
Tony continued to threaten by winning the 12th, but Terry fought back to win the 13th with a par and then sealed his four and three victory by winning the 15th.
Club members extend their condolences to president Trav Mancer and family on the passing of their mother Eileen Mancer.
Eileen was also a past member of the club and won the 1994 Mixed American Championships (nett) title with Rick Connors.
