Corowa-Rutherglen pushed reigning back-to-back premiers Rovers all the way on Saturday, producing one of their most spirited performances of the season before falling by 13 points against coach Daryn Creswell's former club.
Despite favourable conditions, the contest developed into a defensive arm wrestle, with both sides struggling to make the most of their opportunities.
The Roos' defence was outstanding throughout the opening half, restricting the premiers to just two goals before the main break and giving the home side every chance of causing a major upset.
Believing they could challenge the visitors, Corowa-Rutherglen came out firing after half-time.
Kaelan Bradtke ignited the third quarter with a goal four minutes in before Rovers recruit Nathan Cooper responded almost immediately.
Bradtke then struck again to reduce the margin to just five points and swing the momentum back towards the Roos.
The third term came alive after a slow, hard-fought first half, with the game opening up as both sides traded momentum in an entertaining battle.
Tom McCaffery was immense through the midfield, collecting 28 disposals and laying 10 tackles in a dominant all-round performance.
Vice-captain Angus Curry also stood tall when it mattered most, finishing with 23 disposals, eight clearances and a crucial goal that briefly put the Roos in front.
Down back, Tom Forrest was once again a pillar in defence, continually repelling Rovers' attacks and proving difficult to beat in one-on-one contests.
Some ill-disciplined free kicks proved costly, with the Roos conceding a series of free kicks that allowed Rovers to score two quick goals and regain control. However, Will Chandler produced a timely major just before the final break to cut the margin back to five points and keep Corowa-Rutherglen firmly in the contest.
Liam McCarthy and Jackson Richardson also worked tirelessly throughout the afternoon, providing strong run and support while helping limit Rovers' ball movement.
The Roos entered the final quarter with genuine belief they could produce one of the upsets of the season, but despite their relentless effort they were unable to find the decisive goals, eventually going down by 13 points.
While the result didn't fall their way, Corowa-Rutherglen can take plenty of confidence into next game’s clash with Albury after matching it with the reigning premiers for four quarters in another courageous performance.
