In close to ideal conditions for football, the Rovers continued to improve as the game progressed to run out comfortable winners.
The Roos lost Kaelan Bradtke and Damien Wilson in the lead up to the game. Both were out with the flu. This gave young players Ollie Struve and Zander Nash an opportunity to play at the highest level. Zander lined up for his first senior game at the club.
The game began well for the Roos, winning the ball at the source and moving into attack with regularity. It was a much more effective start than the previous week. Early goals to Jy Lane, Ollie Struve and Charlie Nastasi saw the Roos take a solid lead. As the quarter progressed the Rovers settled into the game and were able to even up the score by the quarter time break to be 3.3.21 each.
In the second quarter, the Roos got back to their pressure game causing some concerns for the Rovers who were starting to feel the effects of this pressure. Jy Lane was doing some damage in the mid-field and his moves forward resulted in him kicking another two goals. The Roos went into the long break leading 6.7.43 to 5.7.37.
After the long break the Roos quickly got busy with Charlie Nastasi getting one out with his opponent, winning a free kick and scoring a goal. The game was turning for the Roos, but the Rovers had other ideas and stepped up their work at the contest and their willingness to run and create opportunities.
The Roos were challenged and found it difficult to get the game back on their terms. The Rovers put on five goals in a row before Will Robinson scored a late goal on the three-quarter time siren. Roos 8.10.58 Rovers 10.11.71.
The Roos reset with a focus on winning the stoppages and the 50:50 balls in an attempt to regain the ascendency in the final quarter. But it was the Rovers who were more effective in controlling the game with an 8-goal haul in the final quarter to run out comfortable 38-point winners.
As a result, the Rovers have replaced the Roos in fifth place on the ladder as they move to a win-loss ratio of 4-3, opposed to the Roos 3-4.
Final scores: Roos 11.15.81 to the Rovers 18.11.119.
Award winners: Corowa Gold Club – Jy Lane, Aussie Hotel – Cameron Wilson, Newmarket Hotel – Darcy Melksham, Corowa Whisky and Chocolate Factory – Cody Howard, Origin Clothing – Bailey Pirnag.
Reserves
Corowa Rutherglen Reserves again came up against a strong opponent in the top of the ladder Wangaratta Rovers. The Roos found the challenge particularly difficult that was not helped by some late outs covering illnesses in the senior team. Top up players from the 3rds stepped up to get a complete team onto the ground.
Credit to the Roo boys for the way they persisted when the writing was on the wall early that this was going to be a difficult day.
Best players and award winners: Corowa Whisky and Chocolate Factory – Matt Gould, Aussie Hotel – Jamie Seymour, Sodens Hotel – Luke Backhouse, Club Award – Mak Lavis and Will Seymour, Ricky Ds – Bailey Minogue.
Thirds
The Roos made their way down to Wangaratta on Saturday to take on the Rovers, in what shaped up to be a hotly contested first half of footy.
Riley Allen’s hard work in the middle, along with Ned Taylor, Matt Halton and Tommy Allison in defence, the Roo's just couldn't manage to make the most of our opportunities down forward against a hard running Rovers defence, with the Rovers going in four goals up at half time.
The fired-up Roos came out in the second half with the intent to pull back the lead, and with some strong efforts by Finn Osborne, Ethan Hanrahan and Jesse Johnstone in the middle, it was to no avail with Rovers maintaining their lead and winning the game by thirty-seven points.
The boys have the week off this week to regroup and hit the training track hard in readiness for Wodonga in two weeks’ time, to hopefully get back on the winners list.
Volunteer of the Week
Club Volunteer of the Week was Jack Seymour who has been a great support at the club over many years. Jack is currently the timekeeper for the 2nds and the regular ground marker before home games. Well done, Jack!

There is no Ovens and Murray this Saturday, May 28 due to an interleague game at Mooroopna where the OMFNL will play the GVFNL.
