Shepparton United made the most of its hitout against La Trobe University to keep pressure on League 1 women’s leaders Spring Gully.
The Blues were made to work against a revitalised La Trobe outfit but nonetheless found an early breakthrough via Lilli Wilson, finding the back of the net in the sixth minute of the clash at McEwen Reserve.
United couldn’t add another goal to its tally with the score heading into half-time 1-0, but the second-place Blues managed to find Maria Villani in the 68th minute to calm proceedings, firing off her ninth goal of the season.
Villani’s strike proved the sealer to deliver her side another important win, and with Spring Gully holding a bye in the upcoming round 16 slate, the Blues have an opportunity to jump to the top of proceedings if they can topple Kyneton this Sunday at home.
The Blues, second also in the men’s reserves competition, scored a 13-2 win against La Trobe as Zulfiqar Alizada scored six goals.
The only other League 1 clash to go ahead was the Strathdale and Eaglehawk men’s game, a fixture the former took comfortably 4-1.
Caiafa fundraiser nears $70,000
A fundraising campaign for popular Goulburn Valley local Paul Caiafa is closing in on its $75,000 goal.
The father of four and well-regarded figure in local soccer circles was hospitalised in April after suffering complications — including a stroke — during surgery to remove a brain tumour.
A GoFundMe appeal set up by Paul’s sister Liv is aiming to provide financial relief to the Caiafa family, and at the time of writing had seen more than $68,000 donated.
