After a runners-up effort in the red ball game last summer, Waaia has left an impressive mark in its first stint back in the whites, skittling the home side before making early inroads with just one blemish on the way to the target score.
Tatura won the early portion, however, electing to bat and doing so with confidence as Joshua Macansh and Daniel Coombs combined for a quick fire 48-run partnership.
Macansh scored 28 off 23 deliveries, 24 of those runs coming from boundaries, but Waaia’s Jordan Cleeland got the better of the opener in the ninth over.
However, Tat would stabilise, as Blake Armstrong defended at the crease while Coombs kept the strike rotating along.
The pair lasted 14 overs before Cleeland nicked Armstrong off, and while it was a longer stint at the crease than Macansh, Tatura’s score had improved at a slower rate, albeit it was a handy 36-run partnership nonetheless.

Cleeland was in full flight now though, and Jack Mahoney was skittled for two, before Jesse Trower joined in the action with dismissals of Krrish Patel (seven runs) and Jayden Armstrong (eight).
Trower then took the vital wicket of Coombs, whose opening stand ended with a defiant 76 off 118 deliveries, although it signified the end of Tatura’s formidable presence at the crease.
Waaia began to clean up the tail over the following 13 overs, Tatura all out for 182 with 21 overs left in its innings, handing time for the Bombers to make a start on the chase.
It was nearly faultless.
Waaia’s Damien Atkins made a start of 22, including launching a six, but two balls later the aggressive onslaught led to his demise as Patel sent him packing to the sheds.
Brenton Low joined Cleeland at the crease, and the pair played patiently until the day’s end, with a scoreline of 1-55 a healthy head start before the 80 overs to come on day two next Saturday.
The Bombers require 127 runs with nine wickets remaining on day two, Tatura facing a mountainous task with the ball if it is to steal an upset win - one that would be its first of the season.
