The day commenced with a dynamic hotshots tennis clinic led by Jo and Pete from Tennis Victoria. Participants, ranging from aspiring young players to seasoned enthusiasts, had the unique opportunity to refine their skills under the guidance of these tennis experts. The highlight, however, was the presence of the iconic Australian Open trophies, drawing excited spectators keen on capturing memorable photos.
Wahgunyah Tennis Club President Sandra Johnstone warmly welcomed everyone to the event. Joining her were Indigo Shire Deputy Mayor Bernard Gaffney, and Secretary of the Recreation Reserve Committee Wes Canny.

Together, they marked the occasion by officially inaugurating the new tennis courts constructed in 2021, a significant addition to the club’s facilities.
Adding a touch of grandeur to the event, attendees were treated to captivating tales from John Fitzgerald OAM, a prominent figure in the world of tennis. Mr Fitzgerald shared anecdotes from his illustrious career, providing a fascinating glimpse into the world of professional tennis.
The festivities wouldn’t have been complete without the support of the community. Corowa Rotary took charge of the barbecue, ensuring everyone was well-fed and the Corowa Lions Club manned the coffee machine.

The Australian Open trophies, gleaming symbols of achievement in the world of tennis, undoubtedly stole the show, creating lasting memories for those fortunate enough to be part of this special day at the Wahgunyah Tennis Club.
During John Fitzgerald OAM’s illustrious tennis career, he won 6 top-tier singles titles and 30 tour doubles titles, including 7 Grand Slam doubles titles. He also achieved the career men’s doubles Grand Slam (winning all four), and reached the World No. 1 doubles ranking in 1991, teaming up with Anders Järryd to win three out of the four Grand Slam doubles titles that year. Mrs Johnstone said the event was great success.
“John Fitzgerald was fantastic to listen to, he shared some great anecdotes and remembered people’s names,” she said.
“To have the deputy mayor to officially open the courts was great as well.
“But to see the kids having a great time with Peter and Jo from Tennis Victoria was what made the day special. That’s what it’s all about.”
