Powerful typhoon nears Japan's east prompting warnings

Powerful Typhoon Dujuan is heading towards Japan's east coast, bringing winds of up to 198km/h and heavy rain to the Tokyo area and prompting traffic restrictions.

Dujuan, the 25th typhoon of the season under Japan's naming system, was about 120km southwest of Hachijo Island, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

It was moving northeast at 25km/h, with sustained winds of up to 144km/h.

Dujuan is expected to continue northeast and pass near the Boso Peninsula in Chiba prefecture, east of Tokyo, later on Monday.

The Chiba National Highway Office began preventive traffic restrictions early Monday on an underpass in the city after a heavy rain warning was issued.

The typhoon also forced organisers to close the Tokyo Game Show a day early. The 30th edition of Asia's largest video game exhibition ended on Sunday instead of Monday.

The JMA forecasts up to 350mm of rain in the Tokai region, 300mm in the Kanto region, which includes Tokyo, and the Izu Islands, and 200mm in Tohoku through to Tuesday.

The agency also warned the typhoon could cause severe flooding in low-lying areas.
