Given a "blueprint" by World Cup debutant Paul Okon-Engstler, Perth-born Overy has joined Sydney FC after two seasons in the English Premier League giants' academy system.
Last year's grand finalists Sydney secured Overy on a free transfer, with Manchester United retaining a buy-back option.
The attacking right-back knew he had learned everything the United academy could teach him and was encouraged to find a move by U18s coach Darren Fletcher.
The 18-year-old had also been taken under the wing of United captain Bruno Fernandes, and England internationals Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount.
"When I packed my locker, everyone knows and everyone was like, 'It's a great opportunity, we're all buzzing for you'," Overy said on Monday.
"But it is pretty emotional. It's one of the biggest clubs in the world and you have to almost, like, let go of that United dream in a way.Â
"It was a bit easier saying goodbye to them (Fernandes, Mainoo, Mount) because they know that ... you have to take that step in order to take another step further.
"I'm ready to start my professional career. I'm ready to start playing games."
Overy reached out to Young Socceroos teammate Okon-Engstler, whose move last year from Portugal's most successful club Benfica to the Sky Blues had paid off.
Okon-Engstler, 21, had earned a World Cup debut following a breakout ALM campaign and has now moved to German Bundesliga club FC Koln.
Overy will also be looking to crack into Socceroos boss Tony Popovic's team after being left as an unused substitute for Australia's friendly matches against Colombia and Venezuela in November.
"Paullie's a pretty big blueprint and it's an example for me. That's what I want to do," Overy said.
"I gave him (Okon-Engstler) a call and asked, "What's your thoughts?", and he was like, "Mate, like, do it'.
"Maybe if it's one year or two years, but I definitely want to play and try and get back to Scotland or England, Europe, wherever it is.
"Right now, I'm here. I'm ready to play and ready to win trophies."
Perth-born Overy left the Glory academy in 2023 aged 15 after an impressive performance against West Ham United in a pre-season friendly.
While he didn't make his ALM debut for Perth, Overy is well-acquainted with the competition given morning screenings of Melbourne Victory matches at the United training base.
"They watch Juan Mata," Overy joked.
"At breakfast, you just see it on in the canteen."
Overy will look to hit the ground running under coach Patrick Kisnorbo and make his club debut in Sydney's Australia Cup semi-final against the Victory on Wednesday.
